A Ghost Along the Missippi

 Let me tell you, things did not get much better after that.

 Aurora de Martel, that little witch (metaphorically, of course), fed Camille her blood and then killed her. Actually, by that I mean that Aurora compelled her to drink her blood and then slit her own throat.

 Why? It seems Aurora was obsessed-I mean, in love with my diabolical stepson, and was jealous of Camille.

 And now Klaus was out for blood and revenge.

 "Can you please keep an eye on him?" Elijah asked me. "I have business to attend to, and I told him to stay with Cami. I am worried."

 I sighed. "All right. I'll watch him."
 But as I went to babysit the devil himself, he and his not-quite-dead-yet girlfriend left the compound. So I just went back to my reading.

 Soon after, Freya knocked on my door and said, "I think you're the only still here. Everyone's off on dangerous things."

 "Well, thankfully, you aren't. Do you want to be?"

 "I do want to help my brothers. But they seem to have everything under control."

 "Good. How's your sister?"

 "Hopefully, somewhere far away from this mess. We have a lot on our hands right now, and I'd rather she not be part of it."

 Later on, when Elijah returned from his 'business', he received a box from the Strix. What was inside is actually very gruesome.

 It was the heart of Jackson Kenner. They had murdered my only friend and were threatening to murder Hayley as well if the boys didn't go to meet with them. Of course, they instantly prepared to go off to battle. I suppose that was just how I raised them.

 Klaus left Camille in his room guarded by a boundary spell conjured up by Freya. She was refusing to turn (I can't really blame her for that), with only a glass of blood for company. Klaus was not taking that for an answer.

 Good move, Klaus.

 As the boys went off to war, I watched as Freya took the boundary spell off Camille and told her she could either die alone or use the remainder of her life to help her with a plan. When Freya saw me watching, she asked, "You want to come to, don't you?"

 "Of course I do. I have to try to talk sense into Tristan."

 Freya sighed. "Father, Tristan is the one who killed Jackson. I'm sorry. I know you two were starting to become friends."

 I'd already had a horrible feeling it was Tristan. She was merely confirming it.

 "Tell me what you plan to do," I said. "I will help if I can."

~~~~~~
 What a plan it was.
 So, the boys and I met the Strix for a trade: Klaus and Elijah had kidnapped Aurora, so the trade was Aurora for Hayley and the saratura. They handed over Hayley, and Tristan went into one of those big box containers to get Aurora. But here's what happened. It was Camille in that box, not Aurora. Camille activated the saratura, and since she was between life and death, she was able to get out easily. But Tristan was trapped inside. Elijah convinced the Strix that it was a good idea to send Tristan to the bottom of the ocean and let him drown.
 It broke my heart. I mean that. He had done horrible things, but so had I. We'd had a common goal, until it wasn't my goal anymore.
 But I loved him anyway.
 He would soon find the letter I had snuck into his pocket. And he know that, one day, when all this prophecy nonsense was over, I would find a way to free him.
 ~~~~~~

"What are your thoughts on love, Mikael?" Tristan asked as we basked in the moonlight.
 "Love?" I scoffed. "I have not had time for love."
 "Really?" He traced his fingers along my cheek. "You don't think you could fall in love again?"
 I looked into his eyes, filled with hope, and thought...maybe.

 ~~~~~~
 My dear Tristan,
 Once, my children made a vow to each other: Always and Forever. That is a powerful vow, one that should only be made if you truly mean it.
 I love you, Tristan. I know it may not seem very likely now, but I do. Lust for revenge brought us together and drove us apart. I am so sorry I left you all those years ago. We could have ruled the world together, like you talked about.
 Once all this prophecy nonsense is over, I will come for you. I do not care how it has to done. I will free you. I promise. I vow to you that I will.
 I hope these words will be a comfort to you. If you will have me, I will have you.
 Always and Forever.
