 Hayley and I distracted each other from our sorrows by her telling me all about the Hollow. I just let her keep on talking, anything to get my mind off of Elijah and Erik. What she said was nothing good, but I was sure to store every little bit of information in my mind, for possible future use.

 When Hayley told me she and others were going to try to kill the Hollow, I asked to go with her.

 "Actually," she said, "I was going to ask if you could watch Hope. There's no one else for the job, and she likes you, so it should work out."

 And work out it did. Hope wanted all about my Viking adventures from long ago, and about all the places I had been over the centuries. I must have had a knack for storytelling, because she seemed to enjoy every bit of it.

 "Do you like being a dad?" she asked at one point.

 "Well, it is very difficult," I said, "Especially when you have children like mine. But I think, in the end, it's worth it." I smiled at her. "If Esther and I never had any children, we wouldn't have you, would we?"

 She smiled back at me. "I'm glad you did, then. Hey, Grandpa? Can you tell me where everyone went?"

 "On an important mission. One that I was asked to opt out of, because someone had to be here and have the honor of staying with you."

 "Mm-hmm. Will Aunt Freya be able to save Uncle Elijah? He's hurt in there, and I think he's scared."

 "I imagine he must be," I said. "But I think he'll be all right. We all will. You were lucky enough to be born into a family of true survivors." I clapped my hands together. "So, how about dinner? You must be hungry. Wait here a minute, and I'll see if we have any food around."

 As I went down the stairwell, Kol walked into the compound, looking rather strange.

 "Kol?" I smiled and came down the rest of the steps. "Where have you been? Are you all right?"

 "Father, Hope is here with you, isn't she?" he asked.

 "Yes, of course she is. Why?"

 "I'm sorry, Father." He took a step forward. "I have to do this. For Davina. And I can't risk you trying to stop me."

 Before I could ask him what he was even talking about, he rushed forward and snapped my neck.

~~~~~~
 "Well, you're quite the malfunctioning babysitter, aren't you?" I heard as I came to. I was lying on the floor, and Klaus was sitting in a chair close by, looking down at me.
 "Where's Kol?" I asked. "He was here. He said there was something he had to do."
 "Oh, I know all about it," Klaus said, and leaned forward in his chair. "The Hollow brought Davina Claire back, and linked their lives together as a way to get Kol to help her. Idiot that he is, Kol agreed. He needed Hope to unlink Davina and the Hollow. I'm sure they've run off into the sunset by now, if Davina didn't die when Hayley stabbed the Hollow to death."
 "The Hollow is dead? Is Hope all right?"
 "She's all right now. It's done, Mikael. The Hollow is no more."
 "Oh. Does that mean we're leaving the city?"
 He nodded. "It does, and I think I'll be sorry to go. Why don't you go see Henrik? He seemed a little shaken by the day's events."
 "Of course." I got up and began to walk away. But I turned back and asked, "We're going to bring Elijah back before we leave, right?"
 "Of course we are. I wouldn't dream of going travelling without him."
~~~~~~

 The next morning, I came downstairs to the greatest surprise. Elijah was there, alive and awake, and greeted me with a smile.

 "You're back," I said. "Freya did it, didn't she?"

 He nodded. "I always had faith in her abilities. Oh, you left your phone down here last night. Kol was trying to call you multiple times."

 "Possibly to apologize for attacking you last night while you were on babysitting duty," said Klaus.

 "All right. I'll call back." I squeezed Elijah's shoulder. "I'm happy you're back."

 He smiled. "So am I."

 I went upstairs to my room and had a lengthy chat with Kol on the phone, during which he apologized more than once for knocking me out like that. He told me the same story Klaus had told me the night before, that the Hollow brought back Davina.

 "Well, where are you now?" I asked.

 "Far away from New Orleans by now," Kol answered. "We drove through most of the night."

 "And when will I see either of you again?"

 "Hopefully soon. I don't think Davina ever liked you much, but I can talk her into being nice to you."

 By the time I got off the phone with Kol and Davina, it was later in the day than I had realized. The compound seemed quiet, like everyone must have gone of to do their own things.

 And then I heard the crashing noises coming from downstairs, and I was out of my room in a flash.

 I got down the stairs in time to see Hayley get impaled by a young woman I had never seen before.

 "Father, get away, it's the Hollow!" Henrik shouted. He stepped forward and began chanting something I couldn't quite make out. The woman merely smiled, and with a wave of her hand she sent my youngest son flying straight across the room.

 "Henrik!" I ran to where he had crumpled to the floor in a heap. He was unconscious and bleeding, but he was alive.

 "Your foolish children thought they could actually defeat me," the Hollow said, stepping forward. "You had seen my symbol before and you knew I was something dark and dangerous. You should have known they couldn't possibly stop me."

 "You're forgetting something," I said, standing up. "We Mikaelsons are born survivors, and we've gone through worse than you in our time."

 She smirked. "Have you, then? Well, I'll just have to make sure that I am much, much worse."

 With a another wave of her hand, a piece of wood came flying towards me and lodged itself in my chest. The last I saw before I collapsed was that accursed smirk on the girl's face.

~~~~~~
 When I came to, Henrik was awake and sitting next to me.
 "You are not going to believe any of this," he said.
 I sat up. "First thing's first. Are you all right? What hurts?"
 "Um, pretty much everything, I think. No, Dad, you don't have to-"
 "Just drink it." I held out my arm. "It will heal you."
 He held my arm and began to drink the blood that came from my wrist.
 "Why is everything so dark and dreary?" I asked him. "What happened? I take it the Hollow is still alive."
 "She is. The book Vincent Griffith had didn't work. And now she's possessed Hope completely, and she's disappeared."
 "She took Hope? Well, how do we get her back?"
 "I think Vincent has something in mind, but whatever it is, it can't be good. I heard him say that it would be the end of 'Always and Forever'."
