Gideon continues to be traumatized by my blasé attitude about the officer's murder, but he manages to cling to my back as we melt into the night. I can't understand his surprise, but I have a hard time understanding human emotions.

We're on the run for our lives and that spy was jeopardizing our escape. Plus, I was able to feed. As far as I'm concerned that's killing two birds with one stone.

I run at my top speed through the cover of darkness avoiding city centers and sticking to rural areas where no one is out. I can tell that Gideon is holding on for dear life, afraid that I will drop him or that we will run into something, but I don't have time to explain to him how that won't happen.

Another fun vampire fact coming at you: We're really fast. Impossibly fast. It doesn't make sense that the undead can almost fly over the ground faster than any live animal on the planet, but we can. I can make it from Seattle to New York in less than three days and that's only because I would have to stop and wait for the sun to set.

Christian's house isn't in Lyon, in fact, it's close to the border to Switzerland nestled in the forest. The house is idyllic with pretty white walls and powder blue trim. I half expected the Von Trap family to come out the front door to sing a little song for us. We arrive safely moments before the dawn turns me into a pile of ash. Since Christian gave me a key, I hand it over to Gideon to open the door.

"Go inside, then ask me to come in." I instruct him hastily.

"Wait, why?" He asks with a look of confusion.

"Just do it!" I yell, probably a little too loud.

"Alright, geez!" He replies in frustration thrusting the key into the lock and turning the knob with shaking hands.

The door swings open and the smell of fresh air, dust, and Christian hits my nostrils. The smell churns my stomach as I close my eyes to inhale the scent of my desire floating up into the early morning. Gideon steps inside and turns around to face me.

"Will you please come inside?" He asks.

"Thank you." I'm being curt, which makes me feel bad, and then immediately I feel bad about feeling bad.

We're on the run and we just barely made it out of Paris without being spotted, all thanks to me, and we're still being hunted. Of course I'm a little agitated.

Inside we're met with remnants of Christian everywhere. The dark leather sofas, the imposing mahogany furniture, the shelves full of books, the art of Dali, everything reminds me of him. Why is it that a place can smell like someone even if they haven't been there in years?

"I can't enter a home unless I am invited in." I tell him as he looks around at the living room.

"Oh." He says his attention focused elsewhere.

"It's almost daylight." I keep going. "So I'm going to find a bedroom to sleep."

"Sure." He replies looking at the titles of the books stacked neatly on their shelves.

"Please don't go outside until I get up." I call out as I make my way up a tiny pitch-black stairway.

Something tells me Christian's room is up here and I don't have the energy to look around or explore. At the top of the stairs I am faced with four doors, but intrinsically I know that I am headed for the last door in the left. Pulling out the burner phone Christian gave me, I type in the word 'here.' I can't call him, as I don't know who else might be listening.

Almost immediately the phone buzzes with his response, which is three words, 'I love you.' Just before I close the door I notice that Gideon has found the lights downstairs as the glow filters up the stairs.
