"Bea?" Christian asks carefully. "Will you have a talk?"

"No." I spit out, unable to control the anger bubbling in my gut.

"You know you want to." Gideon whispers as he snuggles beneath the blanket next to Sophie. "He did help us escape, might as well hear him out."

"Thank you, for that." I tell him, my eyes narrowed.

In a childish huff, I stand up and march myself back over to the edge of the loft and drop down to the ground floor followed closely by Christian. We land without making a sound both of us careful to avoid the shards of grey light seeping in through the cracks in the wood. It's going to be dawn soon.

"So, how've you been?" I ask, my voice dripping with sarcasm.

"Don't do that." Christians replies, his tone soft.

"Do what?" I ask, maintaining my tone.

"Deflect using sarcasm." He says with a sigh and moving in closer to me.

I don't like the way my body reacts whenever he gets this near. A tiny buzz of electricity is building at the base of my spine as Christian approaches me slowly.

"Sorry, I'm just having a hard time processing meeting your other girlfriend and the secret love child you had." I tell him, this time looking up into his eyes.

Christian expression is both confused and anguished as he evaluates my face, he looks as if he wants to reach out to me, but I'll be damned if I let that happen.

"I'm sorry I never told you about Sophie, Bea." He begins, his voice soft. "But I had very good reasons-"

"And Elodie?" I snap back, unable to accept whatever weak excuse he was about to give. "You didn't want me to be involved so she wouldn't find out you had a girlfriend in New York?"

"Elodie has known about you for the past twenty-one years." He says simply, his eyes sincere and dropping his voice to barely above the whisper of the wind outside. "And yes she is Sophie's mother, but she is not my lover. She was, thirty years ago, but our relationship was short lived. "

"Is that why you're whispering?" I scoff back.

"I'm whispering because I don't need Sophie to hear this." He growls his expression suddenly protective and harsh. "She knows that her mother and I are over and done, but she doesn't need to hear this right now. Not while she's mourning."

"How am I supposed to believe you?" I ask, allowing the hurt to creep into my voice now.

"You can believe me." The voice of Elodie interrupts our spat as she walks up to us in her lingerie.

Oh, and in case you're wondering she does wear a dainty matching bra and panty set under her clothes that highlights her more than perfect figure. Seriously, it's maddening how beautiful this woman is.

Boo.

"Christian told us about you the week you two met." She says with that knowing smile that burrows under my skin. "I'd never seen him so happy. I asked him to keep Sophie a secret because of your age and profession. You'll have to forgive me, but I didn't want Sophie involved with a young woman who was a Dark Angel. I was afraid that would bring too much chaos and danger into her life."

"OK fair point." I concede with a slight pout. "But you said your relationship with Christian had nothing to do with whatever he and I had."

"Yes?" She asks innocently as if she doesn't understand the implication in her own words.
