Sophie is just like her mother, gorgeous and a little aloof with shiny brown hair that pools around her slim shoulders and a devastatingly pretty face. Her large icy blue eyes, Christian's eyes, watch me wearily while she and doctor Blanc take a seat on the couch. So much for defusing an already super awkward situation. The only thing that saves me is Gideon's winning smile as he strides in from the kitchen.

"You must be Sophie!" He exclaims with an easy grin. "It's nice to meet you."

Sophie gives him her best attempt at a smile as doctor Blanc gets up to hand him a handful of newspapers.

"Just as you asked, The Guardian and The Times." He tells Gideon.

"Thank you very much." Gideon replies happily. "Hopefully it wasn't too much trouble."

"Not at all." Doctor Blanc answers. "I appreciate a man who likes to keep up with world events."

"Well just one event, really." Gideon says with a smile as he opens the paper and begins scanning the inked lines.

"What are you looking for?" Sophie asks, her first statement of the night.

"Gideon has been keeping an eye on the disappearing American soldiers in Afghanistan." Blanc supplies his granddaughter.

"The what?" I ask, surprised that this is the first time I'm hearing about any of this.

"For the past year there have been unexplained disappearances of American soldiers in Afghanistan." Gideon says absentmindedly as he continues his search. "Ah! There was another!"

"I haven't heard anything about this." I reply looking over his shoulder at the tiny article he's jabbing with a finger.

Another fun piece of vampire trivia: Most of us love current events. It's a strange habit you develop when you have an endless amount of time on your hands I guess. Plus I have a teensy crush on Anderson Cooper, which contributes to my thirst for human news. He'd make a devilishly handsome vampire, don't you think? Talk about a silver fox!

"You wouldn't" Gideon says turning his smile up at me. "The American media has done its best to bury these stories because it doesn't look too good that we can't keep track of our own troops."

"Reports vary, but it's estimated that around one hundred or more have just vanished."  Doctor Blanc interjects from his seat on the couch. "Whole platoons in some cases."

"Are we just going to sit around reading the newspaper?" Sophie asks rolling her ridiculously beautiful eyes.

"You don't have to stay here." Doctor Blanc says raising his brow enough to show his displeasure at her behavior.

Sophie has the grace to blush, something I didn't know half vampires could do, as she turns her attention back to her phone. What's so engrossing on that digital brick I don't know, but she's spent the last ten minutes with her head buried in that thing.

"Actually, we should get going." Elodie says to her dad.

Thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

"Yes, it's getting late and I'm sure Gideon would like to sleep." Doctor Blanc agrees.

"It's been a delight getting to know you Bea." Elodie says as the three of them saunter towards the door. "I hope we get to see more of you."

"So much, me too." I reply without thinking.

My less than articulate response prompts Gideon to look up from his paper with the same joyful laugh we shared earlier.
