Flashback

Phoenix and I walked up to the gigantic building. It was the middle of night, and two huge bright lights shone on us. I raised my hand to shield my eyes. "Hey! Look it's some people!" I heard a voice say from above.

"What? Oh! Well get em' in here quickly, quickly!" another voice shouted. The big gate surrounding the camp slid open, and we were quickly rushed in by two sets of hands.

"Hey wait, did you check em?"

    "Check em'? What for?"

    "Infection, you twat!"

    "Oh shit, I forgot!"

"Forgot!" I heard a smacking sound, but my eyes were still blinded by the lights, "This is not a time to be forgetting things now search em'!" Yuno and I were brought into a large room, and scanned.

"All clear!" a different voice said.

"You're lucky this time! Next time you had better remember." My eyes finally adjusted to the light and I saw two men. They both had uniforms on, military uniforms. Military....?

"Hi girls, how you doin'? The name's Lucas." He said as he looked at me, he had dirty blonde hair, and looked about 30, "An' this twat is James. Welcome to the N.C.A.M.S.B. or Northern California Apocalyptic Military Safe Base." He smiled at us and James rubbed the back of his head and gave a cheeky smile.

"Now, what can we get for you?"

(Phoenix POV):

I woke up to my arm whacking the nightstand beside me. "Ow!" I yelled. I had never been a still sleeper. I looked beside me to see Yuno still fast asleep and snoring loudly. I threw back on the jeans, tshirt, and jacket I had been wearing yesterday and went outside onto the balcony. The sun shone brightly and the air was fresh. It would almost feel like a regular day in California were it not for the dead bodies lying in the street.

Below me I saw Mark unpacking the supplies from the SUV. Beside him was Sean with a pistol keeping watch for him. I walked downstairs to see if Mark needed any help unpacking.

"Nah, if I need any help I'll just make Sean do it for me."

"Hey!"

"Are you sure you don't need any help?" I asked again.

"Positive. You should go up to Nate's room, he'll up be able to serve you up something to eat." he said. I went back to the second floor. I wasn't sure which one was Nate's though. But then he came out of the third room down holding two paper plates.

"Phoenix! There you are I was just about to go down to your room. Here you go, fresh from our food stash." Then he handed me one of the plates containing a small amount of stale saltine crackers. "It may not be canned beans but it's the best we've got."

I accepted the plate and ate some of them right there. "Oh yes, sooo fresh." I said with a mouth full.

"Mark was supposed to find some food but instead found you and Yuno."

"Sorry?" I joked.

"It's okay. I'm glad he did." he smiled.

"What would you have done without another sane person in the group?"

"You? Sane?" he laughed.

"I didn't say I was the sane one." I joked.

He chuckled and said, "I'm gonna go bring the other plate to Yuno."

"Are you sure you don't want me to take them?" I asked.

"Yea, I'm sure."

"Alright. That's fine." I said and he walked off toward our room. After a moment I heard yelling. I drew my pistol and ran downstairs to make sure everyone was okay. I was relieved to find that it was only Mark and Matthew arguing over... something.
