Walking with the Dead

Kaylee's pov//

It's been months since all this shit started and we've met some people, good people. I started off the day by throwing a book at Kaitlyn.

"What?" Kaitlyn groaned and rolled out her 'bed'.

"Rise and shine, pumpkin. I'm going by the ocean, I'll be skinning squirrels. It would be a lot more fun if you came with me." I nudged her and she laughed a little.

"You thought." Her morning voice said and i rolled my eyes.

"Just tell Carl or Sophia, I'm tired." She went back to her blankets and fell asleep. I unzipped the tent and walked out to see mostly everybody up and working.

"Carl! Sophia?" I yelled out and Carl same running to me.

"Hey, what's going on?" He asked and I smiled at him.

"We are skinning fish." I took his hand and we ran down to the beach area where the woman were doing laundry.

"Why couldn't Kaitlyn just come with you?" He asked and I laughed.

"Why is everyone complaining? I like skinning fish, it gives me something to do." I shrug my shoulders.

"That's what a board game is for, you know, like the ones we have in the RV." Carl chuckles and I punch him playfully.

About one hour later we take the fish up and Kaitlyn hands us some peaches.

"Thanks, so did the people leave with Glenn?" I asked and she nodded. Interesting.

"So I have an idea, it's hot and sunny so maybe we can go swimming, Sophia agreed to it." Kaitlyn tells us and I smiled.

"Good idea, let's go for it." I said as Kaitlyn handed me a swimming suit. We went to change and came out in our bathing suits.

"You guys look adorable!" Lori giggles and took a Polaroid of us.

"Mom! If anything we look hot." Carl chuckles and looks at me.

"We should go, come on." Sophia says as we made our way down to the water. We stepped in and it was so refreshing.

"You kids having fun?" Dale asked us and we stuck up our thumbs.

"I like this, and I don't want this to ever change." Sophia said.

"We could be safe, we really can be safe." She continued.

"Let's all promise to always be friends, and to never change, no matter what this world throws at us." Sophia puts her pinky up and then I do. Kaitlyn and Carl do and we all smiled at each other until Ed starts yelling for Sophia. She walks out and he slaps her check.

"That's what you get for dressing like a slut." He laughs and we all make our way out. I take one of his cigarettes and light it.

"Kaylee, what are you doing?" Carl grabs my hand and I put up a finger. I press the cigarette to Ed's skin and he shouts and turns around. I scream and start running as he runs after me. Kaitlyn jumps on his back and Carl kicks him in the stomach. He falls down and groans. I laugh and walk back to the others. We give each other high fives until Sophia hugs me.

"Thank you so much." She whispers and I nod.

By the time it's night, we all huddled up in Kaitlyn and I's tent, with solar lamps turned on while the grown ups were having a camp out.

"Do you think we can live here normally guys?" I ask and Carl grabs my knee.

"Yes, good things can last." He assures me and I smile at him.

"Let's play truth or dare!" Sophia shouts and we agree.

"Okay, I'll go first, Carl truth or dare?" Kaitlyn asks.

"Dare." He smiles.

"Okay, I dare you to go lick your moms face!" She laughed and he sighed.

"Fine, but I hate you." He laughs and runs to her. He licks her face and runs back.

"Carl, what the hell?" We hear her yell and laugh even harder.

"My turn, Kaylee, truth or dare?" He asked and I chose dare.

"I dare you to.. kiss me." He says and everybody ooh's. I roll my eyes and pecked his lips. Well that was new.

"That wasn't bad, Lopez." He winks which makes me laugh.

"Enough! Sophia, truth or dare?" She chose truth and I thought about it and decided to be risky.
"Why do you let your dad treat you like that?" I ask and her face grows red.

"I can't stop him, but this gives me the chance to thank you guys, y'all were super badass!" She smiles and I giggle to her.

"Well lights out, goodnight guys, love y'all." I say and Sophia and Carl get ready to leave until Carl takes my face and kisses me. He leaves with Sophia and my eyes widen, as I look to Kaitlyn. She turns around with her jaw dropped and once I can't see her anymore, she laughs super hard. I throw my pillow at her and she shut ups.

When morning comes, I wake up with nobody in my tent. I walk out and everybody is gathered around the super loud car. I run there and it was Glenn. I hugged him and he hugged me too.

"Hey kaylee! How's your day been?" He asks me but walks away, being questioned by Amy about Andrea. I see the van coming and run to it. They stop and get down as I walk closer to the van and notice a man. No, by a man, Rick.

"Rick?" I ask and he looks up.

"Kaylee." He smiles and gives me a hug. They call for 'helicopter boy' and he walks toward the front. One he saw Carl , Carl ran to him, looking super happy. Lori hugged Rick too and I saw the look on Shane's face, he was broken.  He didn't want Rick alive. What a shame. I went to hug Kaitlyn and I smiled at them, we can be happy here.

"I love you guys." I tell them as I look down. I miss my daddy. Kaitlyn takes my hand and laughs.

"So, what are you and Carl?" She asks and I roll my eyes.

"Kids." I scoffed and she groans.

"You guys should go out, sure we're young but take the risk, we are 13 anyways." Kaitlyn says and shrug.

"He hasn't asked me out." I respond.

"But he kissed you, and you're a woman! You go ask him out like the powerful and strong girl you are!" She cheered and I nodded. I walked to Carl and I panicked.

"Hey boyfriend." I nudged him and he opened his eyes.

"Boyfriend?" He asks and I laughed a lot.

"I forgot to ask you, um, you wanna go out?" I ask and he just nods. This was so awkward with his parents watching. We just walked away from them and he took my hand.

"I'll protect you." He smiled and before we knew it, it was night.
