Cami and I were sitting in Cami's living room, continuing to try to figure out more about the serial killer. We had copies of the case files for all of the murders spread across the table, examining the crime scene photos for more clues.
"Every one of the victims has the same profile," Cami told me. "Grew up rich, family comes from old money. Successful, educated, white males living a playboy lifestyle."
"So it is one guy?" I asked. "Not a copycat?"
"Not just any guy," Cami told me. "It's Lucien. I'd bet my degree on it."
My phone beeped. I picked it up to check the text I had just received. "Oh, that's convenient. It's Will. They got Lucien at the station." I stood, pulling on my jacket, pulling my hair out from under the collar. "I should head down there. They might need the type of help a gun can't provide."
Cami stood. "I'll come with you. I want to hear what he has to say."
~~~
Cami and I were standing behind the glass of the interrogation room where Lucien was sitting quietly on the other side.
Will finally joined him, sitting down across from him, tossing the case file for the serial murders across the table for him to read. "Mr. Castle. thought you might want to see this."
Lucien took the file, opening it, perusing the photos inside of the men who had been murdered by the serial killer. "Oh, I read about this. Those poor men..." He looked at the photos more closely, correcting himself. "Ah, in life, they were anything but poor. Solid gold cuff-links, Bulgari watches... Such ostentatious displays of wealth no doubt attracted the attention of some vile criminal element."
Will looked at him suspiciously. "You seem to know a lot about the case. Big fan of True Crime?"
Lucien laughed patronizingly for a moment, gesturing to the cuffs of his jacket. "Look at my watch, Mr. Kinney. My cuff-links. But for a twist of fate, one of those faces might be mine."
Will gave him an unamused look. "Well, you sound real frightened by the prospect. You know, in my experience, people like you don't believe in fate. They make their own luck, whether it's good or bad."
Lucien smiled fakely. "Well, then I shouldn't be here long. 'People like me' tend to have exceptional lawyers to get us out of trouble like this." He let the smile fade, speaking more coldly. "But, while I'm here, you should know that I do hate to be bored, and you bore me." He leaned forward, compelling Will. "I know that behind that mirror are Cami O'Connell and Auria Rayvnne, and I would very much like to talk to them."
I looked at Cami worriedly.
Cami swallowed nervously.
Will stood, walking out of the room.
Lucien looked at the mirror as if he could see Cami and me, wiggling his fingers in a wave.
~~~
Lucien was still sitting alone in the interrogation room.
Cami and I walked in, closing the door behind us.
I confidently sat down in the chair across from Lucien.
Lucien was amused by our appearance.
Cami sat down next to me. "You asked to speak with us. Here we are, willing to listen. Which, if I'm gonna be honest, is more than you deserve."
