Chapter 1- Torment

Some things will forever be there, in a deep, dark corner of your mind

No matter how much you want to forget it

It leaves a permanent scar there

Lock it in a corner of your mind

But can’t throw away the key, can’t let go

No matter how painful it is

(Michelle’s POV)

I crouched behind the bushes, praying that they would not spot me. As I pressed my fingers to my lips to prevent the whimpers from escaping, I flinched at the hard coldness of my trembling fingers. I took in deep gasps of air, willing air to enter my lungs as my entire being shivered with trepidation and pain. All was still as I slowly felt myself calming down and my breathing slowing. Squeezing my eyes tight and feeling hotness pricking behind my eyelashes, I tried not to cry. I placed my hands around me and squeezed tightly, as though if I made myself smaller I would be able to disappear from this world completely. Which I wished.

The silence was rudely broken as a hoard of people charged madly into the clearing, their shoes kicking away the fragile bushes. I cringed when I heard their heavy footsteps and squeezed my eyes even tighter. I tucked my legs beneath me even harder and held my breath, hearing my heart thud loudly against my chest.

"Where the hell is she?" I shuddered uncontrollably when I recognized Jake’s deep voice.

"She must be around here. Split up to look for her!" There were murmurs of agreement and they left hurriedly. Silence descended again. I peered over the bush where I was hiding from, checking whether the coast was clear.  Sighing in relief when I saw there was no one there anymore I stood up slowly, trying to make as little noise as possible.

"You know, you're being too careless."

I jumped and managed to fall on my butt. Hard.

"Ouch." I winced at the sudden pain and tried in vain to push myself up.

There was a cold chuckle and I looked up only to see a pair of cold emerald eyes regarding me expressionless.

I swallowed the lump in my throat as my eyes widened. "Ethan." I meant it to be hard and strong, but it came out like a breathy whisper. I could feel my heart thumping wildly as he squatted down in front of me and looked at me straight in the eyes. Feeling the cold ground below me, I dug my fingernails into the soil. Pathetic, I thought as I fought to keep the tears coming down from my eyes. Just the sight of him already made me feel so weak.

"I came here alone, wanting some peace only to see some garbage lying in my way. Hiding, in fact. Don’t disturb me and get lost.” He gave a dry, humourless chuckle. “You know, I wouldn’t have known in the past that you would be like this now, all covered in grass and mud. Just like a fallen princess.”
