FIVE YEARS TOO LATE

The week had been pretty tedious for the graduating student Sid. It was his first week as a student-teacher in a local high school. Though he was prepared and ready for what he had signed up for, his work had proven to be more challenging than he originally thought it would be.

Luckily, it was the weekend. To help him unwind, Sean, his best friend, asked him out for a game.

Before going out to play ball with him, Sid decided to tidy his place up first. He picked up his bag sitting idly on the sofa and took out the worktext to put it on the upper shelf. He was about to put down the book when a little pink note fell from between the pages.

Curious, he bent down and picked up the note. It was addressed for him. His name was neatly written in cursive handwriting which he was very much familiar of. As the realization sank in, he knew then that the note was from the girl next door named Liza.

With a sigh, Sid slowly opened the folded pink paper and read what was written in it.

Sidney, please say you will wait for me. I'll grow up someday you will see. Saving all my kisses just for you. Sign with love, forever true...

His brows puckered when he read the note Liza left for him. It was an excerpt from the song they used to sing as kids back then. Sid knew Liza all her life. She basically grew up right before his eyes. And ever since then, it was no secret that she had always liked him.

Because of the seven year gap between them, things slowly went awkward... or at least awkward for him.

Noticing the sudden silence from his best pal, Sean threw the ball at him. Sid flinched and cursed at his laughing friend.

"Why so silent all of a sudden?" Sean asked in between laughs.

"Nothing. It's just... this note." He handed the note to his friend and folded his arms over his chest.

As Sean read the note, he couldn't help but bit his lip and raise his brows in amusement. "Wow. She sure likes you, like a lot."

"I know..."

"And what seems to be the problem? I mean, she's real pretty," Sean teased, nudging him in the shoulder. "I know a lot of men who would die for her attention. You're one lucky guy, you know that?"

Sid pushed him away and walked past him, not ready for his friend's usual perverted remarks. "She's pretty, yes. The prettiest of all. But..."

"But what?"

Sid looked back at Sean with creased forehead and incredulous eyes like he was looking at someone who was just crowned the stupidest person on earth. "But she's too young for me."

Sean blinked twice. "So?"

"What do you mean so? Isn't it reason enough?"

"Jeez, man. It's just age," Sean shrugged. "You make it sound like you're a freaking Neanderthal and she's just a baby. She's fifteen, you're twenty-two. There's not much of a difference, if you asked me."

Sid shook his head with a disappointed look on his face. "With that kind of thinking, you're gonna get yourself in jail, my friend."

Sean threw his head back laughing his lungs out. Sid couldn't help but smile too. He snatched the note off his friend's hand and put it in his pocket.

"I'm just saying, if it happened to me, I mean—"

"Shut up, Sean," Sid interrupted. "Don't even think about it. If she's too young for me, she is most definitely too young for you too. So hands off, you pig."
