Four years later...
It had been four years since I had arrived in New Bark and was taken into Elm family. But even then, I still had kept my past in the dark from them. I had told them I didn't have a family anymore, was an orphan. It was a common enough story with all of the disasters that had been happening around Johto. Since then I had become a helper to Professor Elm along with Ethan. We would occasionally do errands and in the process got to know the starters that were in the lab. I knew that someday Professor hoped to send me out on a journey with one of them. Today was that day. I walked into the lab, ready for today's work.
"Hey, I'm going to go feed the pokemon!" I called, beginning to walk out the back door before Elm stopped me.
"Wait one second Amelia. I need to talk to you," he said before turning to one of his assistants. "Mr. Colan could you take care of feeding the pokemon?" The assistant nodded before going to get all of the food ready. I walked over to Professor Elm, waiting to see what he wanted.
"So, Amelia, you've been here for four years and I really appreciate your help. But I feel like it's time you graduate from this position," he said, pulling out a small card before handing it to me. I took it and looked at it before looking back at the professor. It was a trainer card.
"Professor are you sure? I wouldn't want you to be shorthanded around here," I rushed but he shook his head.
"Amelia, you need to go see the world with your own eyes. A journey around the Johto region would not only teach you more things about pokemon but it would help you grow as a person. I've already gotten together the three starters in the other room. Now, follow me," he told me, walking into the room where the starters were held. I stood in my place, stunned for a few seconds, before following him into the starter room.
Once in the room I kneeled down and placed my hands on the glass dome that separated me from the starters. Inside three pokemon slowly walked over to the glass, Totodile, Chikorita, and Cyndaquil. They had all been sent here from the starter center where starters were bred and raised for new trainers just recently.
"You know all three of them, their good and bad traits. It's all up to you," Professor Elm reminded me. I nodded, looking at each of them. They were all great pokemon. I knew any of them would be a good choice. Professor Elm set the three pokeballs next to me as I looked over all of the pokemon once again. I didn't even look as I brushed my hands over the pokeballs, picking one that I knew by touch. Then, I looked at the starters. Then, I closed my eyes and took a deep breath before pressing the button on the pokeball in my hand, returning chikorita to it's pokeball. Professor Elm was about to say something before his computer beeped. He walked over scanning the screen before turning back to me.
"Well, it looks like Mr. Pokemon found another egg. From the picture he sent it seems to be one that is rare," he said. I knew exactly what he was about to ask.
"Then, I guess I'll go fetch it. It may actually be something unique this time," I told him and he nodded.
"I was hoping to send you out on your journey. But I guess this can be your last errand for me as my assistant," he told me. I smiled, nodding. After that I grabbed my bag from upstairs before slinging it onto my shoulder and heading out the door for my last job as an assistant.
I walked down the path that led to Cherrygrove City looking around at all of the people and pokemon that were out. It was a nice day and the temperature wasn't terrible either. I bet chikorita would enjoy this. He's always seemed to enjoy being out on days like this. I thought, grabbing his pokeball from my bag and sending him out. He was a small guy, being the youngest of the group of starters we received only about a month old. I knelt down to meet him, but within seconds he was distracted by a shaking bush running over to it.
"Hey, I don't think that's the best ide-" I began before a pidgey flew at him out of the bush. It quickly went on the offensive, scratching and hitting chikorita with it's talons. Chikorita instantly began running.
"Chikorita, you've got to attack! Tackle it!" I called, running after the two pokemon. But chikorita didn't seem to want to listen as it continued running. I began running faster trying to catch up to the two pokemon.
"Chikorita, please! The only way to stop it is to attack! Use tackle!" I called. Chikorita seemed to listen this time, glancing back at the pidgey before skidding to a stop and turning back towards the pidgey. Then, he rammed into it a few times before it could even attack causing it to flee. I ran over to chikorita, picking him up smiling.
"I told you that wasn't a good idea. If you go into a pokemon's territory it'll attack you. Just try to be more careful next time," I sighed, holding him in my arms. I carried him all the way to Cherrygrove where I had him healed, which took a bit longer than I expected. Once I got outside it was mid-afternoon. I let chikorita back out and looked at him sternly.
"Now, stay by my side this time. I don't want you running off and getting hurt again," I told him, but that didn't end up happening. He continuously would hear something and go to see what it was, not even thinking about what could happen. It took a long while of chasing and talking to finally get to Mr. Pokemon's house. It was almost sundown by then and this was a trip that was supposed to only take a few hours. I knocked on the door of Mr. Pokemon's house to see an older man come to the door.
"Oh, you must be Elm's assistant Amelia. Come in, come in. You can sit down while I go get that egg," he told me, pointing me to a chair. I sat down with chikorita in my lap looking around before Mr. Pokemon came back with an egg in his hands.
"Here it is. Now, I'm wondering. What took you so long to get here? You normally end up getting here within hours of being sent out," he asked. I smiled, glancing down at chikorita.
"This little one decided to cause some trouble along the way," I explained before taking the egg and putting it carefully into my bag. I thanked Mr. Pokemon before beginning to leave.
"One more thing Amelia," said Mr. Pokemon and I stopped a second as he put a device in my hand along with a note.
"Professor Oak had stopped by earlier. He wanted to meet you but he had to leave before you arrived. So, he asked me to give you this pokedex and a note. They're both for you. 'Use it wisely' he said," Mr. Pokemon told me and I nodded before heading out the door. The second the door closed behind me my pokegear rang. I picked it up to hear Professor Elm's voice on the other end, beginning back to New Bark. The second I heard the first few words I froze. One of the starters had been stolen...
