The moonlight shines down on the scene unfolding beneath it. Two people locked in disbelief of the other, one at the fact The Vigilante is a boy no older than herself, the other in fear of the consequences of being compromised. You stare at Ruby with your mouth slightly agape, through the sight of your pistol. Ruby's eyes are wide and full of fear at the fact a gun is pointed at her and she has no way of defending herself without her weapon. She slowly lowers her scroll and places it in her pocket, shaking slightly and her eyes starting to shimmer due to the accumulation of tears. She whimpers as she realises you haven't lowered your gun, or moved your glare.
"P...please...don't" she sobs
The sight of her sobbing and whimpering causes a pain in your chest, but you choose to ignore it.
"I....only...wanted....to know...what...you look like" she stutters her sentence out.
"You can't imagine what can happen if someone finds out who I am" you say through a saddened face, your voice soft.
"I'm so...so....sorry....please" she sobs falling to her knees and her head hanging low.
The pain in your chest returns and you hands start to lightly shake, you drop your mask on the floor. The loud noise causes Ruby to look up into your eyes, her sliver eyes are red and puffy with tears streaming down her face, illuminated by the moonlight. You look into her eyes, your hands now violently shaking, you start to slowly lower your gun. You holster your pistol and you take off your gloves and chest piece. Ruby is still shaking and sobbing, you walk up to her and she winces still thinking you are going to shoot her. You kneel down and wrap your arms around her. She is stunned at first but hugs back and buries her head into your left shoulder, while you rest you chin on her right shoulder.
"I'm sorry little red, I was....I don't know what I was doing" you whisper
Your right hand rubs her back in circles, you can feel her tears soaking into your shirt. She traces her hand down your left arm interlocks her right hand with your left hand and lightly squeezes, you lightly squeeze back. She starts to calm down. You hug her more tightly allowing her fragrance of strawberries to fill your nose, this causes you to slightly smile.
After a while you feel her grip loosen, you pull away and look at her face. She's peaceful and smiling, but also slightly snoring, you smile at her cuteness and you carry her bridal style back to her sleeping bag. You lay her down and tuck her in. You pick up her scroll and bring the picture of you on screen and you look at Ruby, you close your eyes and sigh, you press the delete button. You walk back outside and pick up your mask and gloves, you slip your gloves on and place the chest piece on yourself, you look at your mask in your hands. You turn it over in your hands, so it's facing you, and you stroke the marks on it. You sigh as you click it into place and you walk back into the hall and sit close to Ruby, you need to talk to her in the morning. You look at her face, she's frowning, you start to feel around her sleeping bag to see if she's sleeping on something. She suddenly grabs your arm and smiles. She isn't going to let go but she looks peaceful again, you try to get her to release your arm. After several attempts you realise you are going to have to stay next to her all night. You sigh and lay down you press a button on your mask and you run through some training simulations on your HUD.TIME SKIP
You haven't slept and now the sun is starting to rise. The sun rays fall onto a sleeping Ruby, who sometime during the night, has curled up to you. Even through your mask you can see how the light perfectly defines her facial features, she slowly starts to stir awake. You lay back down and turn your head away. She opens her eyes and gasps at seeing you laying there and that she was curled up to you. She looks you over and thinks you are sleeping. Content in the knowledge that you are sleeping she curls up to you again.
"I'm not asleep" you say
Ruby jumps off you and squeals
"I'm sorry, Errm I thought you were cold or something" she lies
"We need to talk" you say standing up
You start to walk outside, Ruby gets up and slowly jogs after you. It's early morning so it's still cold, you sit down on a bench in the Beacon courtyard. Ruby stands near you but she is trying to nonchalantly hop up and down. She must be cold. You take off your trench coat and wrap her in it, you then lift her up onto the bench so her feet don't get cold. She snuggles down into your coat.
"About last night....the last person who found out my identity didn't keep it a secret. It lead to someone close to me getting....hurt" you say looking out towards Vale, your modifier removing the sadness from your voice.
"I'm sorry, I won't tell anyone I promise" she confidently states, raising a finger into the air.
"I know, wouldn't want Yang finding out about you last night, right?" You say tilting your head towards her.
"Nyaaa" she exclaims turning a bright crimson colour and shrinking into your coat
"Thought so" you say, even with the modifier it comes across as smug
You and Ruby sit there and watch the sunrise over Vale and Beacon. Ruby shuffles closer to you and leans against your left shoulder. Suddenly noises are heard behind you two.
"Yes Miss Goodwitch we are enjoying the sunrise, are you?" You say not moving your head
Ruby turns around and it is indeed Miss Goodwitch
"How did you know it was me?" She asks walking near you
"Footsteps, and time of day" you plainly say
"Care to elaborate?" She asks slightly smugly
"The noises were definitely heels, more specifically boot heels. Which one boot happened to sound slightly heavier, not by much but just a bit more deeper sounding. If I'm not mistaken it's your right boot, that's where you keep your riding crop collapsed right? On the top of your right boot? That changes the balance of your walk slightly. Anyway I could pass it off as any other numerous students who wear heels, but it's early in the morning and all the students want to rest for the big day ahead. So who would be out at this time? A teacher. So a teacher who wears heels and has a slightly heavier right foot? Yep, you Miss Goodwitch" you say still looking at the sunrise
"Your observational skills are quite exceptional, however it doesn't explain how you knew I was going to ask about the sunrise?" She says
"We are up early which suggests something is up, yet I knew you weren't going to probe into it as you saw Ruby leaning on me, so what ever it was has been resolved or is being comforted. However you had already made it this far and you take care of your students, so you decide to strike up a friendly conversation to try and turn the conversation in your favour to ask what the problem is. And what's the one thing that's looking at you right in the face right now? The sunrise, a good friendly conversation starter." You reply still not looking at her.
She looks at you with a shocked expression, she soon regains her composure
"Excellent work, but I take it that whatever the problem was has been resolved fully?" She asks clasping her arms around her back
"Yep" you say
"Good, don't forget to get ready Miss Rose, initiation starts soon. Also don't catch a cold" she says while walking off.
Ruby nods, even if Glynda isn't looking, and goes back to leaning on you.
"That was pretty cool" she quietly says
"I know" you say while wrapping your left arm around her.
