I wondered if that was how forgiveness budded; not with the fanfare of epiphany, but with pain gathering its things, packing up, and slipping away unannounced in the middle of the night. - The Kite Runner

From a good home,
Married off to a stranger
Who knew?
What the future held in store?

Dainty, petite
Positive and sweet
She was but a ray of sun
In this world so bleak

Her husband loved her,
Or so she thought
Until one day he came home
Drunk and distraught

"Take off your clothes," he ordered
She backed against the wall,
Terrified, she shuddered
"Can't you hear me?"
"You dumb c**t?"
"Take them off I said!"
He thundered

Not caring about her in the least
He raised his hand,
A stinging slap, across her cheek

Still numb, unable to feel
She stared at him
Wondering who was he?

Where was her husband?
Loving and kind
Who was this fiend
With such a cruel mind?

He picked her up,
Threw her on the bed
Ripped off her clothes
She screamed in fright
As he pulled her hair tight
With madness gleaming
In his crazed eyes

Scratching and biting
Until the sheets stained red
He thrusted, in and out
With such aggression
That tears seeped out,
From the corner of her eyes
Without permission

Satisfied as of now
He left her there
Battered and bruised
Like a rag-doll,
No longer in use

Next day morning
Face contorted with fear
She served him his tea
Although she desired nothing more
Than to flee

That day she realised
What it felt like
To be a slave
In your own home
To serve a beast
That treated you such

To have no mind
Have no tongue
But only to think
And sink in tears

The ray of sun
Doesn't last long
Slowly and gradually
Engulfed by the darkness
It is soon gone...

But perhaps one day
When she finds the courage
The beam of light
Will come peeking out
And make it to a
Beautiful new dawn...
