"Hello," said the girl shyly
"Sweet one, come here,"
She ran straight into his arms
He picked her up,
Spinning her in a circle
Then she sat on his lap peacefullyObserving the scar
Running down his arm
"What happened to you big brother?"
She said, worried
"Nothing darling, just a scratch,"How could he tell her?
About the grenade
That tore through his flesh
Down to the bone
Leaving nothing
But a burning hole"How are you dear sister?
I've missed you so much,"
He was seeing her after a year
Fighting at the border
Saving lives, yet losing hisFor memories were etched
On his young mind
Of events tragic and wretched
That turned his dreams
To nightmaresShe was his anchor
She was his joy
She had no one but him
And he had no one but her
For their parents had left long back
To their heavenly abodeThey both had grieved much
And suffered more
But she was just a child
Innocent and sweet
Like a lamp in the dark
That burned so brightIt was his duty as her brother
To save her soul
From the evils of the world
And to fulfill this duty he had come"I'm fine. Look! I've grown taller
I almost come up to to your shoulder,"
She stood beside him
And compared their heights
As he sat there on his knees
With a smile on his faceSo long since he had smiled
In such pure joy
Just one thing to be taken care of
And then he would be free
To stay with her and care for her
Braid her hair and play with her
Just like they used to do beforeHe hugged her tight
Her fragile body
Against his chest
"Wait up for me,
I'll be back tonight,""Don't go big brother,"
She whimpered in fear
Trying hard to control her tears
But he had to leave her
So alone and forlornHe wrapped her tiny hand
Inside his own
Kissed her goodbye and said
"I'll be back soon,"Walking quickly to the office
He was resigning as Lieutenant
Of the army
He'd take the salary
And with his sister
He would go far awayWith the letter in his hand
Giddy with happiness
He sped away
Until he saw a burning house
On his wayHe opened the door
Looked inside
He was about to shout for help
When a gunshot was heard
Straight through his heart
Blood pooled beside him
And he was goneThat night a little girl
Was awake till midnight
Clutching her teddy bear
Sitting in her pyjamas
Waiting for her brother
To come back home...
