Chapter 8: The New Guy and the prophecy

This morning Jason shook me awake from my nightmare. When we got outside the entire camp was in total chaos. I run the way everyone else was going and gasp when I see a boy lying in the middle of the strawberry field. I run over to him but Jason grabs my arm.

"Let everyone else check him out first," he tells me, but when I look around I see all of them to scared to move. So I shake off his hand and run to the boy. His hair is going everywhere but if it wasn't so unruly it would like skater hair. His clothes are torn and my eyes widen at the gigantic cut on his side.

I put two fingers to his neck to feel his pulse, his heart is beating but barely.

"Chiron!" I yell to him and he starts shouting orders.

"Apollo's cabin take him to the hospital wing! Raven come with me dear, I have someone that I want you to meet."

I follow him confused and everyone sends me sympathetic looks. I follow Chiron to a cave and a mortal girl steps out. She has fiery red hair, her jeans are covered with doodles, and she wears a small smile.

"Hello Chiron is there a reason why you are here?" she asks him. Then her eyes move to me and Chiron leaves without answering her. Green mist surrounds her, coming from her parted lips.

"The forest of darkness thy shall go,

There thy will find what thy seek,

Thy shall travel far

And meet many foes

Careful for one may bring death

One of the owl and the new one of healing

Shall be thy company

You may find what thy seek but also find burden

The army's of death shall guide thee back home"

She speaks with a gravely voice that sends shivers through my spine. The girl falls to the ground and I look at her with wide eyes.

"Just leave her there. It happens every time she does a prophecy," I look behind me to see a boy holding a spear.

He smiles and my heart almost stops. 'Nico think of Nico' that snaps me right out of it.

"RAVEN WE NEED YOU!! NOW!!" I look up to see Jason waving at me wildly.

"Excuse me for a moment," I tell the boy then run over to where Jason is standing.

"What is it?" I ask. His eyes are large and he looks frightened.

"He woke up, and Chiron told him how you saw him and took his pulse and uh.. He wants to talk to you." I look at him strangely but walk over to the Hospital wing. Apollo's cabin steps aside for me as I look down at him.

"You called?" I smile at his confused face.

He nods and asks, "Where am I?" I laugh and shoo away the Apollo campers.

"Your in the infirmary.. Couldn't you have asked the other people that were standing by your bed?" I ask him curiously. He nods then shakes his head.

"Y-you saved me, I don't normally trust new people." he trails off. I tilt my head, "What is your name?" I ask him.

He looks at me from under his bangs and trys to sit up. I help him and then he sighs, "Shane."

"I'm Raven. What do you remember?" I ask him. His eyebrows scrunch together as I watch him.

"I just got home from school and when I walked into the kitchen this.. thing had one of my dads. It had this dagger up to his neck. I felt something slash my side and I looked down to see that it had thrown another one that looked just like it at me. I was scared but I felt a need to save my dad. Its like my instincts kicked in but by the time I had launched myself at it he was dead." he stops and I see a look of pain cross his face.

"So you're adopted?" I ask hesitantly.  When he nods I lay a comforting hand in his shoulder. 

"Here you will learn to fight.  You will learn how to protect your comrades and fight impossible battles with everyday monsters, just like the one who killed your father.  Lets find you a weapon," I hold out a hand to help him up.

He takes it and sends me a pained smile. "does it hurt?" I motion to his side. The ambrosia probably healed it but I need to make sure.

He shakes his head "I'm fine," he smiles at me.

I grab his hand and lead him out of the infirmary and to the little weapons house. I open the little hatch and pull out a dagger.

"Here try this," I hand it to him but the handle is to small. I take it from him and pull out a sword.

"What about this one," he trys it and it doesn't work either.

I pull out a bow and let him put his hand on the grip thingy (I forgot what its called). It fits his hand perfectly and my eyebrows scrunch together. Apollo maybe?

The dinner bell sounds and I lead him to the mess hall. We get our food and I show him where he is supposed to sit, at the Hermes table. I smile as they greet him with pats on the back and head over to my table.

Me and Jason talk and eat until its time for the camp fire.

When we get there we meet up with all of our friends and I introduce Shane to them and we all sit by the fire. After we sing songs Chiron gets in front of everyone and motions for me to tell the prophecy.

"The forest of darkness thy shall go,

I announce and Chiron tells me to choose the two people from the Athena cabin, and the Apollo cabin.

"Annabeth and....." I hear a gasp from all the campers and look over my shoulder to see a bow and arrows over Shanes head. He looks up and his eyes widen. I smirk and say, "And.. Shane."

The entire camp applauds and I smile at Shane's wide eyes.

"Congregations Shane." I say.
