Chapter 1
(Jesse POV)

I realised that our chances of winning were rapidly deteriorating, but we couldn't stop. We wouldn't stop even if we had a choice. The people of Sky City needed us. The founder couldn't stop Aiden and the Blaze Rods on her own. We had to help.

But as I took down another zombie, I noticed something. The mobs were coming from inside the Palace.
"Lukas!" I shouted to a blonde haired boy who was firing arrows at a ghast.
He turned to face me, ducking to avoid a ghast shot.
"What?" "Cover me! I need to get into the building!"
"Ok!" He shouted. We ran towards the building. I trusted Lukas to stop the mobs while I ran straight into the Palace, knocking into a skeleton as I did so.

The hallways were empty, with only cracked mob eggs shells littering the floor. But there were no mobs, which led me to think that there had been a battle before I arrived. But where were the attackers now? And, could they help me?

I peeked my head in through the throne room door, and froze at the sight in front of me.

Aiden. He was sitting on the throne, the throne that belonged to the Founder, and Reginald was kneeling in front of him. He had a bruise on his arm, and his uniform was torn and ruined.

I watched Aiden raise his sword, about to bring it down on Reginald.

"No!" I shouted as I sprinted though the door towards them, and held out my sword, blocking Aiden's hit. The two swords clanged together, creating such a force that Aiden was thrown back into his throne, and the Reginald and I were thrown back onto the floor.

(Aiden POV)
I was the first to get back up. I could feel my face growing hot as I realised who had interfered. Jesse. She has taken all the fame, and now she has come to take my new kingdom from me? Why can't she just let me have one victory?

I got down off the iron throne as Jesse got back up. The look in her eyes threw me off guard for a second. I didn't see fear, or anger. I saw disappointment in her green eyes. She held her sword up in a sign of peace.

"Aiden, why are you doing this?" She asked me, staying in front of Reginald, who was still on the floor. "Why are you destroying Sky City?"

Her question left my mind blank. I had expected her to tell me to stop, or fight me. I didn't think she would ask me why.

"Well..." I was struggling for a comeback. "Well, Jesse, I thought you were supposed to be smart. I'm not destroying the city, the mobs are." I crossed my arms and smirked at her, waiting for a reply.

I expected a reaction, but all she did was turn around and help Reginald up.
"Go. Help your people," she whispered to him and he retreated out the room. Then she turned back and looked at me, shaking her head. Her emerald eyes that were framed by her long charcoal hair were wide and serious, all trace of the fun I used to see in them gone.

"Don't change the subject, Aiden. Please tell me why you're doing this."

The anger that I had felt minuets before rose back up inside of me, except twice as strong. Jesse doesn't understand. Everyone adores her. The old order, the people she saved, the whole of our world... And Lukas, too. Our old leader, who left our team to join hers.

But she can't tell me what to do. I don't follow her lead, unlike everyone else. I want to have power too, but she is stopping me from doing that.

I let out a low growl, and darted forward to where Jesse was standing. Knocking her diamond sword out of reach, I held my own up to her throat. I grabbed her arm, so she couldn't try to punch me off.

Staring in her eyes, I could see the fear that i was expecting before when she saw me, but also something else. Was it determination? I wasn't sure. Her emerald eyes mixed with my jade green ones as she stared back, waiting for me to make an attack.

But looking at her, I felt my anger fade. It was like she had calming effect on me, and it puzzled me. We were still staring at each other in silence, and eventually I gave a sigh, all my anger and resentment gone. I stepped back, and lowered my sword arm.

She was still looking at me with a faint trace of fear in her eyes, probably not sure if this was a trick or not. I turned to walk away, but a warm hand on my arm stopped me.  I looked round to see that it was Jesse. I expected her to shout at me, but all she did was say,
"Aiden... Are you ok?".

I wanted to tell her. That I wished people would look at me the way they look at her, but I'm sure she would be anything but sympathetic.
"I... Uh, I'm fine..."

She looked at me with such kindness in her eyes, a kindness I thought would be reserved for her friends only.
"I don't think thats true."
I don't... Really want to say..."

Her hand moved to my back, and the other too. She enveloped me in a hug, and she rubbed her thumbs in soothing circles.

I let out a sniff as I hugged her back. I didn't realise tears had come to my eyes. What was wrong with me? I was supposed to be tough, not cry like a baby.

"Hey," Jesse whispered in my ear. "It's ok. Come on, lets-"

She never finished her sentence, because with a terrible boom, a ghast blew a hole in the roof, and descended down to face us.
