(Nathan sits at the desk as it moves to downstage right.)
Nate: Once upon a time..... No, no not like that. Hmm. Ah.
(Nathan pulls out his "Narrators journal from the desk drawer.)
Nate: Hello and welcome, you are all probably wondering who I am, and why I'm sitting here. You are also probably wondering why this is in script formatting, and why are you reading a book with characters that haven't even introduced themselves. Well. I'm Nathaniel Grimm, my father is Wilhelm Grimm, one of the brother's Grimm. As if it isn't obvious
This is a fairytale....
Well, not really.
Oh and you are probably also wondering why this chapter is marked 0, Zero?.. Well, this is before our story begins. IT'S A PROLOGUE!
(Nathan lifts his fists in the air in excitement.)
Okay. I get it! This isn't as exciting to you as it is to me. Anyways, you will see me later, let's get on with our story. Let's go back to how we got here in the first place.
(Nathaniel crackers his knuckles and opens the journal in front of him.)
Okay! Long ago.... We had all once known about our beloved fairytale characters such as Dorothy Gale, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Pinocchio, The little mermaid, etcetera, etcetera, they all became legends in libraries, children's books, modern plays, even silver screen feature films. But what you didn't know, it that they were all real.
Calli: Wow! Cliche much?
Nate: But it's the truth, no matter how overwritten in the genre it is. This is my Cousin Calli. She's the other Grimm.
Calli: Have you told the readers the part where these fairytale so also have children, and How Alice..
Nate: Calli! Your skipping stanzas again!
Calli: You're*
(Nate and Calli stare off into each others annoyance)
Calli: Are those stage directions? They don't seem that good.
(Hey! I'm trying my best here, Calli exits as Nathaniel continues our story.)
Nate: Thank you. Anyways, yes these stories are all real. After their "Happy endings" they had continued on with their lives..... Well almost. This all started when a young English girl named Alice Liddell had grown up and left Wonderland.
(Enter young Alice.)
After Alice left Wonderland, she began to continue her life in the Overland. When she turned 18 she finally tried telling the world about the Wonderland... But no one believed her. People didn't trust her "madness", Alice was seen in a different light then. She was no longer seen as the curious and sweet child, but she was marked "Childish" and no one believed that she would ever grow up. That was until she reached out to another girl her age, this girl had too been into a mysterious land filled with strange creatures, the land of OZ. But people said it was all a dream. Alice Liddell had met Dorothy Gale.
(Enter Teenage Alice and Teenage Dorothy.)
The two girls had decided to run away from the world of realities, as they both truly knew where they belonged. But one problem, they didn't know how to get back. Maybe it was all a dream.
(Slowly more and more classic fairytale characters enter and are illuminated alongside Alice.)
Then one after another, Alice and Dorothy had found more and more people with other "fairytale" like experiences. And what had seemed like an eternity, Alice found "the rabbit hole". Her gang of fairytale friends had all descended into wonderland. Many stories had flourished into the underland. Cities and shops were made, civilization was born. The reign of the wicked red queen was vanquished, and a new queen was elected. Alice.
(We see buildings and trees emerge upstage.)
These stories had all lived in the underland, and eventually had bore children. Us, the new generation, Millennials Some might say. But there was a problem. Alice wanted her child, yes even she had a child, she wanted her child to live a fulfilling life. And wonderland... Well wonderland isn't quite up to code. Yes Wonderland is well... Wonderful, but if you are thinking about growing up here, some foundation needs to be set. So Alice brought along the idea of schools, education, occupations, and basic civilization. Seven elementary schools, five high schools, eight colleges.
(We see a small group of children running around a playing, enter Young Emmett, Young Elijah, Young Mason, and Young Electra.)
This is how our current Deca Cards High was created. Luckily this was all done before every child was the age of five, I know... Perfect timing right! Soon after.... Alice's husband.... Had vanished. As our Alice had prepared for the future of Wonderland's next generation and mourned the disappearance of her husband, she made a promise to her own Son.
(Enter small sitting room chair center stage with Alice and young Emmett.)
Alice: Emmett, I know we are going through.. Some shaky times at the moment and that you are going to start school soon. I want to let you begin your life with this. My child, I will love you no matter who you are. I will always be here for you no matter what happens. I will always accept you for who you are, what you do, and for what you believe in. As long as you stand by it, I will stand by you.
Young Emmett: Mom.
Alice: Yes Emmett?
Emmet: I love you.
Alice: I love you too. And I'm sure your father does too.... Wherever he may be.
(We see Nathaniel blowing his nose loudly with small sobs.)
Calli: Nate?
Nate: I'M NOT CRYING!
Calli: Would you like me to get Elijah on the phone?
Nate: .... CALLI!
Calli: Don't worry, I know where the door is.
( The story no longer appears to be set upon a stage, but in real time.)
Nate: Sorry, that part of the story gets me every time. Anyway, let's get to present day. Here at Deca Cards High, Alice is principal and the Millennials are within the current Junior class. Including Alice's son Well... I'm all caught up, for our story is set in our present day. Everyone! It is time to sit back and relax, and this.... Is Story-Time!
