Chapter 47: Calling Shelby

Early the next morning Braden wakes up smelling coffee, knowing Shelby is home. He walks downstairs and sees Shelby sitting outside on the back patio. Grabbing a thermos he pours some coffee in it and sticking his head outside.

"Um I'm gonna head out. Raelyn's still asleep," he says. Nothing from Shelby.

Braden gets to work, trying not to let anything show that something is bothering him. It's a quiet day, Braden lifts some weights in the weight room--keeping to himself, not knowing Cole is there doing inspections and working on some paperwork. Also recruiting people for special duties and assignments.

"Evans," he walks into the workout room. "You interested in special rescue?"

Braden smirks seeing Cole. "No," he quickly says, laying down on the bench and lifting.

"You sure? Free training, extra money."

Braden shakes his head, putting in headphones.

Cole sighs walking out as Luke turns the corner. "I want you and Evans on special rescue."

"Alright coo. That means Keanu is with us too?"

"Who?"

"Braden's dog. He's been training him for months. He's certified now."

"Yeah sure whatever."

"He's good Cole. You remember the hospital shooting?"

"The one where Shelby risked her life? Yes I remember."

"Yeah well Keanu risked his life too. If it wasn't for that dog she would be 6 feet under in a casket," Luke walks past him, hitting his shoulder. He walks in seeing Braden. "Hey, signed us up for special rescue."

"I told that asshole no."

"Well too bad. It's like a shit ton more money. We can do anything in this place after that."

"Okay," Braden laughs.

"Come on, don't wanna be the best? You can take Cole's job."

"I'm pretty sure Shelby left me," Braden blurts out.

"Wait what?"

"She came home yesterday. Late. Started crying. Claims there is still feelings for Cole."

"Damn...you serious?"

"She went to a girl she works with house for the night and when I went back to bed her wedding and engagement ring were sitting on the dresser."

"Shit. What are you going to do?"

"Right now. I'm worried and focused on Raelyn."

Luke nods. "This your guys first fight?"

"It really wasn't a fight. We didn't fight. He just came into the picture and BAM, doesn't have feelings for her husband anymore," Braden laughs.

"Nah," Luke smirks. "I don't think she does. They were together awhile man, he was her first love. You wouldn't have feelings for your first love if she came back into the picture?"

"Your sister is man you know that. The others were just...flings."

"You didn't love anyone till her?"

"Nope."

"And lucky you, got to meet her at the CFD BBQ and ya'll been inseparable since."
