third person
"can i get that one please?"
"yes—"
"wait no, nevermind. can i get the other one?"
"sure, if finn's ok—"
"hold up! that one looks so good! can i get that one instead?"
"oh my god, just pick a flavour hayley!"
the three were standing in front of the local icecream counter, one chuckling, one frustrated and one conflicted.
"but vienna! they all look so good. how do you even choose?" hayley whined.
vienna shook her head and covered her eyes, "i'm going to go grey at 16, god help me," she muttered under her breath. however, finn heard her and let out a sputter of a snicker. this caused vienna to glare, and damn did she glare hard. "ok hayley, which flavours are you struggling to pick from?"
"erm, this one and this one. oh, and that one too! also that one, can't forget the one next to that one either and—"
"nope! no! just stop before i scream."
the thirty or so man behind the counter wore a genuine smile. oh so he's amused by my pain, what a lovely gentleman vienna thought.
"finn, please take of this child, she is your responsibility now, just take her away!"
"wait wha—"
"hold on one second! you can't just pass me onto someone—"
finn looked at the man, "i am so sorry about this," the man just chuckled and shook his head.
"—i am your sister! you're responsible for me!"
vienna began pacing and looked up towards the ceiling, "please, if you can hear, save me the spawn of satan itself and—" her sarcastic prayer was interrupted by the whack of a plastic icecream spoon.
"i'll pay for that," finn held his hand up.
"you don't even believe in God, stop begging for me to leave you alone because it'll just make me want to annoy you more."
"ok! i do not care anymore! i'm just going to close my eyes, point to flavour and you are getting that! does it matter that might not like it? nope! right let's do this," vienna walked up to the counter, apologised to the worker, closed her eyes, and pointed to a random flavour.
rum and raisin.
"oh my, no! i'm picking again. i am not going to be the one to introduce my eight year old sister to alcoholic icecream,"she waved her arm around again and it landed on a different flavour.
strawberry icecream.
"oh look what we have here hayley! strawberry icecream—"
"but i'm allergic to strawberries!"
"i hoped you forgot that, would've been a good way to get rid of you for a few hours—"
"vienna," finn warned, he was only slightly embarrassed as it was just him, the two girls and the man in the shop.
"right yes, choose another flavour and god so help me, be an appropriate flavour," vienna once again waved her arm around and it landed on a flavour that made hayley squeal. vi shifted her hand slightly to the right and hayley stopped jumping and began pouting.
vienna opened her eyes, vanilla. hah.
she smiled at the worker who just laughed back, "what can i get you darlin'?"
"one scoop—"
"after all of that, one scoop?!"
"fine, two scoops of plain, boring vanilla icecream please,"
"cone or tub?"
hayley looked slightly hopeful, "because i'm not all that mean, can i get the icecream in a tub please," hayley exclaimed, "with about six wafers added in if that would be ok?" the worker, who vienna found out was called 'steve' laughed and nodded. hayley let out a sigh of relief.
"coming right up. anything for the very patient young man over there? or are you just here waiting for your girl and her little one?"
your girl? ok, slow your roll dude.
finn grinned, "i'll just get the bill steve, thanks,"
vienna whipped around, "the bill? no! i've literally just wasted ten minutes of your time! you can't just expect me to let you pay finn,"
"you just gotta deal sweetheart," he handed a fiver to steve, "keep the change,"
steve nodded and placed the change into the tips jar. he then handed the big tub of icecream and wafers to hayley, "there you are darlin', enjoy," he leaned a little closer and brought out a bottle of brown liquid, "here, have some chocolate sauce with that boring icecream,"
"thanks kind sir!" hayley grinned.
finn saluted steve and walked out of the shop, followed by a now irritated teen and a happy, already icecream covered, little girl.
"what a nice bunch of kids," steve muttered.
