[A/N: I know its been quite a while since I have published anything. Apologies! Enjoy.]

Waking up from resting my eyes felt much heavier than it should have. My head felt too close and too far away from my body and my mouth felt like it was stuffed with cotton. Was I drugged? Did Nat really drug me? I try to move around but my body isn't cooperating and the lights are too bright. Before there is a chance for panic to set in, I here a familiar voice.

"Hey, hey, take it easy alright? Christine, can you hear me?" The voice says, the sound seeming clearer as the fog of my vision fades. Clint's face appears further away than I originally thought.

"Clint! Where am I?" I slur.

"Among the living!" He states boisterously.

"That seems like the answer to every question I've asked recently." I deadpan. Heh, get it? Because I died. Too soon?

"I feel drugged? Was I drugged?" I ask while taking the glass of water from his hands.

"Yeah, Nat kind of freaked out at the acid dripping from your hands. It wa-"

I choked on the water before he sat me up in the comfortable quilted bed I was in.

"Hold on, acid? What the hell are you talking about?" I squeal, the noise piercing my eyes and causing me to wince.

"You didn't know you could do that either?" He asks confused. I uncover myself and go to place my feet on the ground beside the bed, Clint puts a hand out just in case.

"The list of things I didn't know about myself has grown a lot recently." I huff. "Did Nat leave me?" I ask softly.

"No, she's down stairs with Laura and the kids. We can go down there when you're ready." He gestures towards the door. I nod and take his outstretched hand, using him for support since I'm pretty weak.

---

When we get down stairs, I hear the kids playing outside. Clint guides me to the kitchen table where a PB+J awaits with a glass of milk. Laura and Nat look up from their coffee conversations and smile softly.

Clint helps me to the chair with the sandwich and milk and goes to sit across from me. I look down at the sandwich cut into stars and hearts.

"You didn't have to do this Laura, it wasn't worth the trouble." I say trying to lighten the mood. She simply scoffs, "Try telling the kids that. It was their idea to cut it into shapes. Also, it is worth the trouble, I know I'd be hungry after five months six feet under." Well, this is such a macabre topic. I don't want to have to got through this with everyone I see. I don't even understand it myself.

"How did you break this to the kids?" I ask with a mouthful of sandwich, quickly followed by milk.

"They think you're a magician. They are actually outside picking flowers for you because every magician needs a bouquet up their sleeve." Laura states and Clint hums into his coffee.

"You've got a lot up your sleeve I didn't know about." Nat smirks.

"The acid. You're referring to the acid?" I ask before taking another bite.

"We were in the car and you were having a nightmare and acid started dripping from your fingertips. It was eating through the seat so I stopped the car and injected you with something new from the lab. It stopped the acid drip but then you were dead weight. Pun not intended. I didn't want to risk anyone seeing you before you were at least somewhat safe, so I drove here. It's a longer journey by car than by hellicarrier. " She finished the last bit of her coffee and Clint takes her mug to the sink.

Silence followed. The uncomfortable kind too. I hate that. I pushed my unfinished sandwich away and leaned back with a sigh. "When I woke up, I thought I was trapped by Hydra. I didn't realize I was underground until I blew the top out and the dirt turned into mud. It was like my elemental manipulation had increased into something unstable. And, I uh... can't seem to heal my injuries. Which doesn't make much sense because I've rested long enough. And the acid; that's new." I finish softly, "What have I become?"

The table is solemnly quiet before Nat speaks up, "I don't know. But right now, that doesn't seem like a bad thing. I mean, you're alive! That's better in my book... Look, I can't stay much longer. I'm scheduled for a mission and if I don't head back, Cap will start looking. I know you don't really want to be found yet. But reports have already been made about your missing body. So, to keep your cover, and my mission, I'm gonna head out." Nat says, with a hand placed on one of mine.

"What am I going to do?" I ask her.

"You'll be here with us." Clint states, looking to Laura before the couple looks towards me.

"What if I'm unstable? The kids?" I ask hesitantly.

"You will be fine. The kids will be fine. You and I will figure out whats going on and make sure you you aren't a threat to yourself or others. Then, we'll go from there." Clint used his dad voice.

"And with that, I'm out. I'll check in when I can, okay?" Nat says and I nod.

I hate being treated like an infant but I've never felt more vulnerable and unstable as I do now.
