Avril made a huge mess in her room as she searched for her mother's earring that she stole when she played dress up with Cassie, two weeks ago. Her clothes went up in the air and then fell on the pile of books on the floor that she had thrown out of her drawers.
"My mum is gonna be mad at me," Avril panicked.
Cassie was busy picking up the clothes and book from the floor in an attempt to clear the mess Avril was making.
"Avril, we've searched everywhere, it's not here," Cassie said in a slightly irritated tone. "Maybe you left it in another room, or maybe your mum took it," she said as she picked up a heavy dictionary from the floor. A picture slipped out of the dictionary and landed on the bed. Cassie picked it up and looked at it; it was the picture of a young boy. He looked no older than five. He held a basketball in his tiny hands and he smiled a wide smile that bared all the teeth he had. He was wearing a blue shirt and black shorts, the outfit was paired with green shoes and long white socks. Cassie smiled at the picture.
"Who's this?" she asked and she held the picture up to Avril.
Avril took a quick glance at the picture and then she continued her search. "It's my brother," she said, "before he..." she trailed off, and then she continued her frantic search.
"You guys look so much alike," Cassie commented as she looked at the little boy, and then at Avril.
Avril froze with some toys in her hands and then she stood up. 'That's not possible,' her lips twitched.
"Why?" Cassie furrowed her eyebrows.
Avril cleared her throat and then she took the picture from Cassie. 'Well, it's because I'm way cuter," she giggled.
Cassie rolled her eyes at Avril and then she continued cleaning up.
For a while, she did not hear Avril speak nor make any noise whatsoever. She was curious to know what caused the silence and so she lifted her head up from what she was doing. She saw Avril standing in front of a mirror. Avril's eyes went from the picture in her hand to her reflection in the mirror. She pulled at her cheeks and poked her nose, and then she just stared at the picture. She stood there for quite some time and did not even notice Cassie studying her for about five minutes.
"She had to have been adopted," Joseph said.
"I'm sure Avril knew about it," Cassie said. "Maybe she was looking for her biological parents, that could be the reason why she was so secretive."
"I don't believe people just get murdered because they want to know who their parents are," he seemed frustrated and then he banged his hands on the roof of his car. He moved his teeth along his bottom lip from left to right. "I don't get it," he let out a breath.
