Jillian's P.O.V.

I finally did it. I have finished law school. It's everything I ever wanted. But in the back of my mind, I see that face. I hear that voice. It's so irritating and annoying. But also so sad and painful.

As I pack my things in my room, I hear a knock on the door.
"What do you want, Jessy?"
"So uh, you're moving out?"
"Yup, I found a nice apartment near the courthouse. Make my new job easier to get to." There was a brief silence after my cold answer.
"Just so you know, I think I'm getting closer to finding Jackie May." That name. It makes me want to cry and vomit all at the same time. "Since she's linked to the case of Red Paint, it'll be easier to find her and bring her home."
"You still don't understand."
"What do I not understand?! Yes I know she lied to us, but I believe she did it to protect us. And you can't blame her for mom dying and dad leaving."
"Yes I can. Also, since she has had activity in a gang, she can be sentenced to jail. Nothing you can prove will fix that."
"Maybe not my word but Jackie's."
"Nothing but lies."
"Let the court decide that." I can't help but laughing at his response. "What's so funny?"
"Let the court decide? The jury has no say in the matter. The only people that need to be convinced is the judge. Besides knowing- no I don't know Jackie May Hamilton anymore. I won't know if she'll plead guilty or innocent. But I do assure you, she will be going to jail. And when or if she gets out, you will not see me there at the gate to greet her."

I grabbed the last of my things and exited the building. I hear Jessy call out from behind.
"I know I can't change your mind about Jackie, but please come back to church. Don't let this incident affect your faith. Please." I stop in my tracks and glare over my shoulder.
"You call this an incident?" He fell silent. "I will make no such promises. Good afternoon, Officer Hamilton." I continued to the car of my friend, Ryan's car.

As soon I get in the car Ryan has a concerned look on his face. "Don't look at me like that."
"I don't like your plan. It's really sketchy and risky."
"You know I'm right."
"I'm not saying you're wrong to get prepared for this case. Thing is you're planning on defending against your sister. She hasn't been arrested."
"Yet. Officer Hamilton says they'll be able to catch her and the gang she's in soon."
"You don't even know if she'll plead not guilty which means you might not even get the case."
"But either way, the victims of the gang have to decide if they want to press charges."

Ryan drops me off at my new apartment. "If Jessy can catch the gang soon, then I can get my first case. I'll let you know when it happens. See you later."
"Bye, Jillian."

I walk into my apartment. It's small but it's only for me, so it's perfect. It has a stove, fridge, table, a small bedroom, and bathroom. I set my stuff down and start to unpack my things. I didn't pack any pictures of anyone. Just clothes and essentials.

So this is my new life. On my own. I don't want any association with those two after Jackie May's time in court. This is the first step in a new direction.
