Tilly sat on a chair next to Grace, watching with great fascination as her mother put her hair up into a bun before she carefully applied her makeup and was now deciding what jewellery to wear.

"Mama?" Tilly said, pointing at the box that sparkled with so many pretty trinkets.

Grace smiled at her and pulled out some necklaces and rings for her to play with.

She had so much and she'd be lying if she said in the early years of her marriage that her eyes didn't light up just as much as the jewellery when James bought it for her.

Now it all just sat in the box and only came out for special occasions, or functions.

Like today.

Tilly copied her mother and now clad in shiny treasures, ran a makeup brush over her face, her eyes closing as the soft bristles tickled her skin.

"Mama, when I grow up, can I have high heels too?" Dottie asked as she came out from Grace's walk-in closet, her feet teetering in a pair of Grace's heel.

"If I still have them, then of course," she smiled in the mirror at her daughter as she trotted past.

And promptly fell.

"I'm alright!" came a muffled voice from down on the ground before Dottie struggled to right herself up.

Grace smiled warmly at her as she tried not to giggle.

Tilly however, rolled her eyes at her sister.

"Princesses don't fall over Dot," she said.

"Good thing I'm not a princess then," Dottie replied a she continued to practice walking, "because I'm a queen!"

Grace chuckled as she tidied her vanity and waited for Tilly to return her jewellery to the box before standing up and smoothing her dress down.

She picked up her cropped black jacket and put it on.

"May I have my shoes now?" Grace asked Dottie who reluctantly handed them over

"May I have my shoes now?" Grace asked Dottie who reluctantly handed them over.

"Mama, where are you going?" Tilly asked.

"I'm afraid I have to go out for a special lunch with Ma Joan and Auntie Lucy," Grace explained.

"Why can't we come?" Dottie pouted.

I feel your pain, Grace thought.

"Because they'll be lots of older ladies there, much older ladies," Grace said pointedly as she picked up her clutch purse.

"Oh you know old ladies smell!" Dottie said and held her nose to prove her point.

"And they always want kisses...eww..." Tilly agreed.

"Then it's best that you stay home then, isn't it?" Grace agreed, "and besides, "I'm sure Rosie's going to need your help in the kitchen knowing her."
