Because I aspire to write as well as them...

Nixie

Running through the streets I took in very little of my surroundings, only what I needed to know.

The sky was greying with the days end nearing, and the forest was coming into my line of vision now. All three boys had taken chase shortly after seeing me but were not phasing, probably worried about exposure in this small town; at this thought I abruptly changed my direction, tossing a bin on its side at the same time, causing Blondie (as I had so ingeniously nicknamed him) to trip and fall flat on his face, he'd gotten too close for my liking. There was only one or two people on the street other than me and my pursuers. Since they looked suitably shocked by the scene I was causing, and were not chasing me, I could only assume that they were human. I was now sprinting towards the main road skirting the trees further along, hopefully if I could get them to stay human I could keep out of their way without attracting others in their pack.

Throwing a look behind me, I managed to find another burst of speed within myself, these guys may be fast but they sure as hell couldn't catch me. No one could unless they truly caught me by surprise.

And of course Blondie having gotten his phone out at the end of the street meant that I had another reason to pick up the pace.

Their footsteps thudded loudly against the pavement behind me. They were getting closer again.

Not for long.

The road was now upon me and I was running along it's boarder, but this was allowing them to get too close, so I twisted sharply into the throng of glittering metal.

You may thinking right now that I’m a reckless and have a tendency to do things without considering the consequences to myself.

You'd be right.

But this added a new thrill to the chase, so obviously I couldn't pass up the opportunity; this was the very essence of my being.

I narrowly avoided getting hit by some big red pick up truck only to find myself coming head on with some other smaller blue car, I twisted again and heard a high pitched screeching followed by a dull thud, several horns blared and I threw myself to the grass embankment on the side in order to avoid more danger from the road, while the noise increased around me.

Raising my head I twisted to see the path of destruction that I’d caused.

The whole road had come to a standstill.

Many cars had turned to avoid hitting me, only to find them selves crashing into other vehicles as a consequence. Luckily none of these crashes appeared to have been particularly lethal but the road was a mess. A very loud mess.

Unfortunately for them however a car had collided with one of the boys, who currently was laying in the middle of the road groaning pitifully, the other boy had been smart enough not to follow me. Instead, he was standing on the other side of the road staring at me with a look of pure astonishment on his face.

I grinned at him.

He blinked at this snapping out of his thoughts, and hesitated momentarily, before briefly glaring at me and rushing to his friend.

I couldn't help but roll my eyes at this exchange, it's not as though the guy was going to die, he would probably be safe and sound within the next ten minutes, fully healed within a week at most.

Magic is a source of awe and wonder for a reason.

I turned and began to walk down the road again, the territory boarder was only two minutes away, no-one was going to chase me now, not with this mess needing to be sorted out.

After finishing my sixth oat cookie, I decided that it was probably best to stash the rest of my stuff away for later. Raising from my position on a fallen tree, I walked to the rock face a few feet away, it was taller than me, so if I could make myself some form of den it should be fairly comfortable. The gorge around me provided an enclosed and well hidden area to reside in and if I did find myself needing to run for whatever reason, there were multiple routes I could take.

The waterfall, while noisy, meant I had easy access to a place where I could drink, wash and hunt; it also meant that people couldn't hear me.

Skirting along the pebble banks of the water I couldn’t help but wonder if they'd managed to clear up the road by now.

I smirked at the thought of the big bad leader being told of today’s events.

I'd already been here for about a week before my little snacks raid, just checking out the area and figuring out who was here. I'd come to the conclusion that the sphelka that inhabited the area were predominantly of canine shifter type origin, hence me naming them a “pack”.

Sphelka is quite a broad term really, amongst our kind there are numerous variations. Sphelka is just our word for our... Species I guess, like you would say a gorilla was an ape.

Of the variations of Sphelka I am a Threllnia, this means that at the age of eighteen I should be able to shift into an animal form (mine being a wolf), perform magic and extend my mind fully (talk to people telepathically and a few other neat tricks...).

But as I’ve already mentioned I am capable of shifting already.

I suspect that the other capabilities will come to me at the age of eighteen, like they should, but a lot of time has been taken up in the past in wondering why I was different.

Not that I didn't like being able to change into a wolf, in fact I loved it. I’d say that I had spent more of my life in my wolf form than I had in my human one. It was just so much simpler, so much more exhilarating, it was no responsibilities, freedom, survival.

It was me.

It was usually the most people ever saw of what I really looked like, a dark grey wolf with a battered looking ear and a permanently fluffed up, tousled looking, coat.

I liked it this way, I didn't feel the need to socialise, and when I was eighteen I would have full control of my abilities (hopefully), then I would phase and never look back.

Night-time was truly taking over now I thought, gazing up at the blackening sky, a few stars were beginning to make an appearance.

Fingering the wolf pendant dangling around my neck, I closed my eyes and let go as the change overcame me.
