Connie let herself smirk as she strolled past him leaning against the wall outside the ED. It was clear that he had no reason to be there other than to watch her arrive. She looked for no more than a second not wanting to give him the satisfaction of knowing he too had her attention.
Flicking her hair over her shoulder she kept up her quick pace ignoring the eyes she felt boring into her. Things had been, interesting, ever since he had started working in the ED and it was beginning to cause her a distraction to the otherwise plain life she led.
Her daughter visited when in the country, and that's how it had always been. She had chosen the career over a life, yes there were times she wished she had chosen otherwise but it wasn't in her nature to think of anything but the power and job.
"Morning Mrs Beauchamp. Have you seen this email, about the Christmas party?" "Ohh Charlie please don't do that when I've just got in..." She rolled her head backwards with a groan as he walked alongside her towards her office. "Sorry, bearer of bad news just seems to fall on me. If it helps it's a retreat so you might get some relaxation hours in."
She laughed shaking her head as she placed her things down on her desk before looking to Charlie in her doorway. "Please... With that lot?" Cal, Jacob and Max came bumbling through the department loudly with laughter. "I'll never catch a break with the children in toe." Charlie smirked before leaving her to become settled.
Jacob had replaced Charlie in standing in her doorway, leaning against the doorframe as he watched her lean over her desk reaching into her drawer for something. His eyes fell over her body, a feeling low in his stomach as he allowed his eyes to linger on her. Something about her enticed him, he knew she wouldn't bite but it was all a bit of a game with her.
For the last three months they had been up and down, wandering in circles waiting for the other to be the one to admit what they knew was there. Connie being stubborn barely admitted she liked the guy, let alone thought of being alone with him. Jacob however was known as a player, someone who could have his pick of the girls yet here he was secretly pursuing the one who turned his advances down on more than one occasion.
Whistling from where he stood Connie's head lifted to see him standing there. Folding her arms tightly against her chest, she watched his eyes drop then return to hers. She lifted a brow as he refused to move, normally by now he'd have made a comment and disappeared. "What?" "Nothing, I just didn't think you'd hire 'children' in a hospital. Kind of irresponsible of you don't you think?"
Connie scoffed turning back around to her desk, not hearing the door press shut. All she felt was the warmth from Jacob's body as he stood closer to her. Straightening up she could feel his breath across her shoulder. Glancing over slightly she spoke calmly. "Anyone would think you were desperate Staff Nurse Masters."
Jacob laughed watching as she turned around to face him, an amused expression on her face. "Me? Desperate, that's like saying you're kind." Leaning closer he bought his lips to her ear, his voice low. "Something we both know isn't true." Standing up, his eyes met hers for a moment and he felt the urge to kiss her. Ignoring it, he stepped backwards, the same cocky smile she hated on his face.
Leaving her office door wide open, Connie was left standing with her hands on the edge of her desk, staring at the space he vacated. "Mrs Beauchamp?" She flicked her eyes up to where one of her young F1's stood. "You're needed in resus." Grabbing her stethoscope from her desk she threw it around her neck storming from the office towards resus.
Jacob was by the nurses' station as she walked by, he lifted his eyes momentarily from his patient notes in time to see her eyes moving over him. She returned her gaze to the room ahead focusing on the patient while Jacob turned back to his notes. "God I wouldn't say no." Jacob looked sideways to Cal who was staring into resus after their boss. "What-" "Beauchamp? What you wouldn't want a chance with her? I know I would."
He laughed throwing the folder down to the desk while Cal smirked. "So, you coming out tonight? I hear there's a few ladies we met the other night hoping to bump into us again." He raised an eyebrow as Jacob patted his shoulder with a smirk. "Course I'll be there, I'll catch you later." Jacob strolled into cubicles glancing back to resus only once as he continued with treating patients.
As the shift drew to a close Jacob wandered out of the ED and towards Cal who was waiting outside. "There you are, come on!" He shook his head towards his friend. "Anyone would think you were desperate." The words falling from his lips as they had from hers earlier that day. He didn't hear whatever Cal said, his head turned back to see Connie strolling out of the ED with Charlie.
He watched her until she was walking alone to her car. She felt someone watching her and it wasn't until she looked up ahead that she saw him. Her stomach turning as she saw how intently he followed her across the car park. Moving her hair over her shoulder, she unlocked her car throwing the paperwork into the back.
"Jacob?" "Yeah-" "Coming in?" Cal held the pub door open as he nodded stepping up to it, pausing once again in the doorway as he turned back to where Connie was now smirking. She pushed her tongue into her cheek getting into the car, driving away seemingly without a second glance to him. Jacob had shown her the hesitation he had to carry on as he normally would, the first crack he had openly shown her proving she was affecting him more than he wanted to admit.
