It's Just Fun

Weeks went by and Connie spent more of her nights wrapped up with him, she didn't necessarily stay until morning but on the odd occasion she did.

Jacob knew not to overstep boundaries at work, and she liked that. However, Connie's idea of what this was seemed conflicting in her own mind, let alone how it would seem to anybody else she spoke to about it.

"You seemed cosy then." She lifted her eyes to Charlie who stood firmly in front of her. Jacob smiled as he walked into cubicles leaving her shrugging. "I don't know what you mean by that, or what you're implying but there's nothing going on between myself and Staff Nurse Masters." "Really?"

She pushed her hands to the desk with a roll of her eyes before walking away. Charlie was quick to hop around the desk following her. "Because if there was, I wouldn't judge you." "Look... It's just some fun, nothing serious or meaningful. I doubt he'll even be interested for much longer. This is Jacob, he's used to taking a new girl home each week."

Without another word she headed into her office while Charlie walked away. Jacob remained leaning against the wall of the corridor having heard most their conversation. Is this really what she saw it as, just some fun.

He was torn between storming in and talking to Connie or leaving it. The better option won, and he walked away in search of Cal. "Hey, you're still out tonight right?" "What that girl of yours loosening up-" "What girl?" Cal smirked with a nod as he placed a hand on his shoulder. "Yes... So I've got my partner back. End of shift out the front?" "Sounds good."

Jacob smiled as he walked away before his eyes fell to Connie emerging from her office. She smiled briefly in his direction but he turned his back walking back into the department. Frowning to herself she continued with what she had come out here to do.

By the end of the shift, Jacob had succeeded in fully avoiding any interaction with Connie. She was unsure as to why, but it had been nice to work a shift with no complexities. Except, that wasn't the case. With Jacob not talking to her, she found her mind working double time trying to make sense of what she had done for him to act like this.

Each time thoughts came to her mind, she realised that her words to Charlie earlier couldn't have been further from the truth. Crossing the department she paused outside the staff room hearing the chatter from inside.

"I can't wait, there's these girls I've been watching all week. One of them is definitely your type of girl, tall, blonde and incredible." Jacob smirked as Cal continued talking. "Let's go have some fun." They walked out bumping into Connie who was acting as though she were passing.

Jacob looked to her before avoiding eye contact. "Have a nice night, try not to screw over too many people." Her words were bitter and harsh and he knew she had heard what either or both of them had been saying.

"You go and I'll catch up, there's something I need to do." Cal nodded leaving the hospital while Jacob spun around and headed into her office. "What part of knocking don't you understand?" "It wasn't a problem this morning-" "Well it is now." He frowned meeting her gaze. "I don't get you. You say you want this to continue, then say it's just fun, that it means nothing to you-" "Well clearly it doesn't if you're off out to shag someone else."

Jacob scoffed with a nod. "You know what, I guess you're right. I guess you can't have meant enough if it's this easy to think about being with someone else tonight." He could see the hurt that his words had caused her but it was too late to take them back. "Get out." "Gladly." Jacob turned away making sure to shut the door with some force behind him before the guilt built.

Connie slowly sat down at her desk mulling over his words before letting her head rest in her hands. It took a moment before she grabbed her things heading for the door. She made it outside and to her car before stopping herself.

This wasn't her. She didn't run or hide at the first sight of something like this. She didn't fall for people, she played them at their own game and she sure as hell made sure she won every single time.

Connie changed her direction wandering into the bar across the road before heading to the opposite side of the bar. Taking a seat she ordered a drink, it didn't take long for someone to approach her and pay for the glass of wine. Her eyes lifted as she smirked, bringing the glass to her lips.

Jacob continued to laugh as he moved closer to the woman beside him, speaking quietly with a smile until his eyes fell to her. As soon as they had a feeling unlike any other built up inside of him. She stood, pressed to someone else, a devilish glint in her eye as he whispered sweet nothings to her.

Whether it was jealousy, or anger, or something entirely different he wasn't sure but whatever they were doing right now was not working. He couldn't move his eyes from her now that he had noticed her and it somewhat pained him to have to watch her. She was worth so much more than a meaningless night with some guy who was clearly after one thing from her.

"Hey, so do you like her?" Jacob snapped round to Cal before realising he was indicating to the blonde who had taken residence at a small table. Jacob shrugged picking up his glass, another subtle glance to Connie. "She's alright-" "What do you mean alright? She's smoking-" "It's not really my type."

Cal scoffed shaking his head. "You've always gone for girls like her." Jacob turned to the bar leaning against it as he noticed her eyes on him. He clenched his jaw as a smile appeared on her face, she pressed a hand to his chest before wandering away. Jacob placed his glass down seeing Cal had moved away from him.

Manoeuvring through the crowds of people he noticed her waiting up ahead. Risking it, he walked up to her grabbing her wrist as he pulled her to one side. "Hey! Let go of me." She snatched her hand back glaring across at him as he stood opposite her. "What are you doing?" "What, so it's okay for you to sleep with someone but when I-" "Why Connie? You're worth so much more than what some guy who bought you a drink can give you."

She went quiet for a moment unsure of what to say. Jacob turned around pacing back as she laughed. "You really do think too much of yourself don't you-" "You don't get it do you?" "I get that your ego is far too big." Jacob stepped back up to her pushing his hands against the wall either side of her.

Connie fell silent as he stood closely before her. "I can't stand the sight of you with someone else." "Well then I guess that's too bad, you should probably go back to your 'type'." She spat the words starting to move away before he held onto her arm. "My type? Funny how that seems to be the opposite of everything sitting out there."

She froze in place once again as he looked down at her. "Pretty is about the only thing he did get, except my type isn't the slutty sort who feels a need to force it down your throat." Connie moved her eyes up to his, feeling a pull that not even she could pretend wasn't there.

"She's more of a hidden beauty, doesn't realise how incredible she looks half the time. She looks natural, nothing fake about her. Blonde, might be more fun but I'm pretty sure the best nights I have had are with someone a little more feisty. She has a glint in her eye that I can't ignore, I get too lost in them. As for height, well I'd rather someone that fit with me effortlessly."

Jacob remained standing closely before her. "You." Connie frowned bringing her eyes back up to meet his. She went to open her mouth before he interrupted her. "If you're too caught up in your own world to realise it, everything I said is you, Connie. Since that night everything is always you, if I want it to be or not. I don't have a type because I don't want anyone but you-"

His words stopped as she pushed forwards, her lips forced onto his cutting him off. An arm around his neck as he moved his to her cheeks pushing her hair back. Connie deepened the kiss as his hands dropped down her body wrapping around her waist drawing her closer.

When she broke from his lips she stayed close, refusing to meet his gaze. "I don't know if I can do this-" "All I ask is you try. I can't watch you with anyone else." Without another word she pushed her lips up to his again, knowing that she didn't want this to be anyone else except him.
