You can use a plot line to help you set up the foundation of your story.
However, don't rely entirely on it. Your story can become monotonous and cliche, if you rely on the plot line entirely. The best example I can give is Game of Thrones. The book has various plots and many different events occurring. By not relying entirely on the plot line, George R.R. Martin keeps the book interesting and lively.
