~Sawyer's POV~
I couldn't get to him in time. This was all my fault, my fault...I poured Joey those shots...I should have told him no.
I should've known he was heartbroken and didn't care about the consequences of anything.
I grabbed my phone off the counter where I had put it down when Joey came home.
My shaking fingers dialed the number I never wanted to have to call.
911: 911, what's your emergency?
Sawyer: My friend...he's drunk, and he-
Shit, now I'm crying, too. My fault, my fault, my fault. The words beat a steady tattoo in my brain.
911: Sir, please take a deep breath and try to explain.
I drew in a shaky breath. I HAVE to let them know what's wrong with Joey.
Sawyer: My friend is drunk, and he fell and hit his head on the floor. He's unconscious, but I'm not sure if it's from the alcohol or from his head hitting the ground.
911: Is he breathing?
Sawyer: Hold on, lemme check.
I mentally smacked myself in the face. That should have been the first thing I looked at. I knelt next to Joey.
Sawyer: Joey, it's me, Sawyer. Can you hear me?
He gave no response. I rolled him over, and, to my relief, saw his chest rising and falling.
Barely. He wasn't breathing normally, as if he were asleep, but each breath was shaky, like he was gasping for air.
I placed the phone back near my ear.
Sawyer: Yes, he's breathing. But it's not too steady...I'm not sure how long he's gonna be able to hold out.
911: We'll send the paramedics to you right away. Are you at home right now?
Sawyer: Yes.
911: What is your address?
I gave her my address, then hung up.
Sawyer: Joey, please pull through for me.
I heard the sirens echoing throughout the city. I ran to the window and saw that the flashing lights were almost at our house.
I knelt by Joey.
Sawyer: Joey, they're here.
I heard a knock on the front door and ran to open it.
The paramedics flooded the apartment as they gently lifted Joey onto a stretcher and wheeled him out to the ambulance. One of them had a clipboard, and started asking me questions.
Assistant: What is the full name of the patient?
Sawyer: Jo-Joseph Graceffa.
Assistant: How did this happen?
Sawyer: H-He was drunk, and then he fell and hit his head on the ground.
Assistant: Thank you.
The assistant paramedic turned and walked towards the ambulance.
I grabbed my phone and my wallet and, on a second thought, took Joey's phone with me, too, and ran out the door to the ambulance.
Sawyer: Wait!
I ran up to the back of the ambulance, where they were lifting Joey inside.
Sawyer: Please, let me ride with him! I need to make sure he's okay...
