"Okay..." Scarlita whispered breathlessly to herself as she clenched an old book in her hands. Her eyes were closed so the warm tears in them wouldn't roll down her face. She was a strong woman now, and her strength was something that was important to her. After both of her parents died in the...incident, she had to basically take care of herself. The people in the world she lived in didn't always respect her because of what she was, so often she had to avoid conflict with others. That was why she had lived far away from others in the mountains. In some ways, she supposed, it was better than living with the humans.
"Silly girl..." she said to herself in a thick Spanish accent, staring down at the white skin on her hands. "You're half human."
She took a deep breath, holding both of her hands out in front of her and closing her eyes very tightly. She gritted her teeth, using up all of her energy to try to open the portal. Slowly, a bright blue mass of light started to grow bigger and bigger. "The portal..." she strained to say through gritted teeth. "You got this girl. Just a little more..."
The portal had grown to its full size and was ready to be used. Scarlita stepped back, admiring what she had created and putting her hands on her knees out of exhaustion. She grabbed the bag she had packed, threw it over her shoulder, and prepared for the worst.
It was cold.
And wet.
"Ahhhh!" Scarlita exclaimed, barely able to keep her head above the surging water. She knew it was impossible to declare where the portal was to go open up, but in a river? "Dammit!" She cursed, trying to grip some of the passing objects but failing miserably. The water was horrifyingly freezing, and it seemed to seep deep within her body. Scarlita tried to get a hold to the land on either side of the water, but the current was too strong and the land too slippery. She was at the mercy of the moving water.
Up the river, she noticed a large rock near the side. She decided to try to grab it, but it was coming quick. She timed it carefully, and when the time was right, she grabbed the rock with all she had and managed to hoist herself on top. Before the current could pull her back in the frigid water, she threw herself over the rock and onto the snow covered land.
"Mhhmmm..." she whimpered, laying down in the thick sheet of snow. The water had played its part on her, but the cold snow made it ten times worse. She was weak, but she knew she had to get up and find somewhere to stay.
Using every ounce of energy she had left, she stood herself up and began to trot her way through the cold and snowy forest.
"What the hell am I supposed to say to him?" She whispered to herself, walking threw the snow. She was twenty three years old which meant it had been sixteen years since she had seen Grillby. She had heard he ran a bar, but what was she supposed to do? Just walk in there and say hi?
Eventually, Scarlita started to see various wooden cabins and homes. She tried to smile, but every movement shot pain throughout her body. But when she saw a building that read Grillby's she picked up her pace with a new found happiness.
There she was. Right in front of the doors that held her best childhood friend inside. He'd understand, right? The times had been tough, and Scarlita hadn't been able to come. But...he would understand. He'd have to.
She opened the doors, and immediately the stares of men fell upon her. She sighed, and slowly began to make her way towards the counter. Her clothes and skin were still soaked, and her usually pinned back red orange hair was down and slicked against her face. Although she tried not to draw more attention to herself, the constant click of her boots echoed throughout the bar. She picked up her pace, covering her chest with folded arms, and made it to the counter.
