Jace's POV

I grinned as I turned to the guys and was about to answer when a piercing howl rent through the night. Quickly, we all scrabbled to the window and peered outside. A cool breeze brought the scent of the weres to us and we all jumped out the window without a second thought. I landed softly on the ground and then turned around to watch as the rest of the guys followed. I turned around in a circle looking for Phoenix, but ducked as something flew by overhead. Looking up I realized that it was Phoenix. Her crimson wings made it look as if she was on fire and her bloody red eyes were the most terrifying things I have ever seen. She turned in midair and shifted back before us. Even though I had seen her in her bird form before, it still scared the hell out of me when I saw her burst into flames and change. Her eyes stopped glowing as she turned to us and then without a word, she turned and ran towards the distant wolves. Cursing, Sam gave chase with the rest of us on his heels.

Normally, we could easily outrun a human, but Phoenix was no normal human. I could see her using her fire like a rocket, propelling her faster and faster as she raced ahead. Suddenly she stopped and I laughed as James didn't realize and ran right into her. She glared at him as he gave her a sheepish grin in return.

"Okay. So what's the plan since we all just ran out here without discussing anything?" Tyler asked in his calm cool way.

"We split up. Tyler, Jace, you two go right while me and James go left. Phoenix, stay here"

I grinned as I caught her mutinous expression and I knew that in that instant, she was going to fight. Remembering the first time we met, I knew this was personal. She hated all wolves and wouldn't hold back in a fight with them.

*Flashback*

I had been wandering through the woods when I smelt burning wood and the scent of blood. Running in that direction, I caught the sound of fighting and screaming. Running faster, I found myself in the middle of a battle. The clearing was a giant blaze of flames that seemed to grow and dance with a life of their own.

In the middle, there was a warlock and a witch fighting with swords, and spells were flying as they fought what looked like an entire pack of werewolves. Suddenly there was a large burst of fire and I whipped around, rooted to the spot as a girl who looked about 7 or 8 started to launch more fire at the wolves. One howled as a ball of fire struck it's back. Enraged the wolves started fighting more ferociously and the older pair were hard pressed to keep fighting. The girl appeared to be singing as she fought but it wasn't a happy melody. I didn't understand it but it filled me with fear and sent tremors running though my body. The wolves closest to her started to whimper as she got louder.

Suddenly she seemed to explode in fire. Burning flames flew everywhere, consuming everything. I threw myself to the ground and covered my head as fire exploded over me. I may be a vampire but fire was one of the few things that could kill me. Slowly and carefully, I lifted my head and saw nothing but the girl who was surrounded by fire and ashes. Everyone was dead, including the 2 warlocks, who I assumed were her parents. She clenched her fist and all the fire disappeared, leaving smoking debris behind. Then she collapsed onto the ground, sobbing. I ran over and just held her, muttering soothing words. She buried her head in my chest and we sat like that until nightfall.

*Present*

I frowned as I saw the light of battle flash in her eyes and gave her a warning look. She shot me a pleading one in return. I bit my lip, torn between obeying Sam or just letting Phoenix go and kill them all. I opened my mouth to give her my answer when a very happy James marched out of the bushes, dragging a bloody wolf behind him. 'I seem to get interrupted a lot.' I thought to myself annoyed. James threw the wolf onto the ground and crossed his arms with a smug look. I had been so busy staring at Phoenix that I hadn't noticed everyone leave.

"Good job James." I didn't even look up as Sam walked over to us. I was too busy staring at the wolf. He looked so familiar but I couldn't place where I knew him from.

"So Wolfy. What's your name? And why don't you shift back while you're at it."

The wolf growled but then his eyes landed on me and he shifted back. He had dirty blond hair and green grey eyes that seemed to change and flicker with a life of their own. He looked to be around 24 years old and had one diamond earring.

Without taking his eyes from me he said, "Jayden. My name's Jayden."

"So Jayden, where's the rest of your pack?" Sam asked.

"I'm a rogue, exiled from the Blazing Star pack." He finally looked at Sam and I felt my eyes go to Phoenix, worried she would attack him. She was staring at Jayden with a look of confusion. I caught her eye and gave her a questioning look. She just shook her head.

"What did you do to get exiled?" Sam continued, glad to have Jayden cooperating.

"My mate was a vampire. Her name was Gabrielle Storm. I marked her and my alpha found out and tortured her to death with holy water and vervain. He then exiled me for being a traitor to the pack and putting us all in danger. I came here to see him." He said nodding at me. I noticed the empty look in his eyes when he said Gabrielle's name, and I knew where I had seen him before. After all, Gabrielle was my older sister. Now I knew where I had recognized him from; Gabrielle had sent me a picture of  the two of themwhen they went to a beach in Miami.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. Gabrielle had always been my closest sister and I had loved her more then anything else. With my watery eyes still closed I asked in a whisper,

"How long ago did she die?"

"4 days ago." I noticed that Jayden seemed to be on the verge of tears as well.

"Why did you come to see me?"

"i thought that you could help me and understand my pain. I want revenge for Gabrielle and I want those bastards to suffer as they die. Vampires are cruel by nature, especially to werewolves. Will you help me?" His eyes hardened as they blazed with a scorching fury. I looked at Sam and he nodded. Then I realized something. While we had been so busy talking Phoenix had disappeared.

Phoenix POV

I watched with sympathy as Jayden told what had happened to him. He wasn't like the others I had fought in the past. I was about to offer my help when everything went black and the scent of magic filled my lungs.
