"That bastard!" Edward grumbled to himself. Colonel ass-face had just assigned him a mission with Y/N. It wouldn't have been too bad, if it wasn't made painfully obvious that Mustang was trying to torture the poor blond. Roy knew very well that Ed has the BIGGEST crush on Y/N, and he was going to take every opportunity to embarrass him because of it.
Y/N was just calmly sitting next to the fidgety alchemist as he tried to draw in his sketchbook. They were currently heading west to a small town with news of suspicious activity happening at night. Normally, the Elric's would have gone alone and dealt with it themselves, but Y/N was a skilled fighter and had the ability to clean up whatever mess the duo made on their adventures. He was an alchemist as well, but spent most of his free time traveling to places with unfortunate circumstances and helping those in need. If there was an earthquake, boom. Y/N was there to save the day. It made Ed's stomach flutter at the thought of his selflessness.
So here he was, trying to ignore his bright red cheeks as he watched Y/N draw in his little book. He had seen some of his pieces before, and he was talented to say the least. When Ed asked how he had gotten so good at drawing, alchemy, and had some pretty decent combat skills, he had just attributed it to being bored as a kid. He grew up in a ghost town in the north where there wasn't much to do. He kept himself entertained by learning alchemy and drawing nonstop. The fighting aspect came from his four other siblings who were all older than him. A kid's got to defend themselves eventually.
Ed tried to sneak a peek at what Y/N was drawing, but he was having none of it. He would turn so the page was only facing him, he would hit Ed with the end of his pencil, (not too hard of course) and he even went so far as to give Ed a menacing glare that screamed "if you don't cut it out right now there will be blood."
Needless to say, Ed took the hint.
They sat in a comfortable silence for the better half of an hour. It was dark, and most of the other passengers were sleeping as the train sped forward. Ed was about to fall asleep too, when he noticed that Y/N was completely out of it. The sketchbook lied open and face-down on his knee, the pencil that he had been using earlier (both as a writing utensil and a weapon) was tucked behind his ear, and his head was slightly slumped over to the side. His (H/C) hair was slightly messy as it hung in his face.
To put it simply, Ed was in complete awe of the gorgeous boy beside him.
Alphonse was there too, just rolling his eyes at his brothers childishness when dealing with his crush. He knew of his brother's feelings for the other male and didn't really care. He always knew his brother liked boys from a very young age. He could just tell.
"You know, you could actually talk to him instead of stare at him like a creep." Al said to his brother as he was snapped out of his concentration.
"Shut up. And I'm not a creep!" Ed said, his voice was quiet as to not wake up the sleeping boy beside his as well as the entire train cart.
"You sure, brother? I would say watching someone while they sleep is pretty creepy." Al teased. Ed was never going to hear the end of this.
"Well it's better than the alternative. I can't just tell him. He'll freak out and never speak to me again. Besides, I don't necessarily have time for a relationship right now. You know, with everything going on?" He motioned to the train around him, implying the entirety of their run and go lives.
"I'm sure he wouldn't mind. Plus, he travels a lot too. He could come with us. It would be nice to actually have someone with good communication skills tag along. You're certainly no help in that department." Al half teased and half convinced Ed to talk to Y/N. It was a long shot, seeing as how unbelievably shy Ed was in romantic situations, but Al could tell that the two would make a perfect couple.
Y/N's coolheadedness would balance his brother's hot temper. They were both quick thinkers and tended to have out of the box ideas. They were opposites in so many ways, but the same in so many others.
Also the fact that Al shipped it so hard that he would do just about anything to see it happen.
Edward just sighed and looked back to the sleeping male next to him. His face looked peaceful and serene as he sat there. Ed looked at the motion of his chest rising and falling with every breath. He closed his eyes.
"What if I screw everything up. What if he doesn't even like guys. What if he does, but doesn't return my feelings." Ed looked down at the place where his feet met the floor.
"What do you have to lose? I mean, he's going to be with us on this mission, but then he'll leave after it's over. He doesn't have a reason to stay with us, unless you can give him one. If it doesn't work out, then hey, you tried. But at least you know and don't spend the nights wondering about what could have been." Al said to him softly.
Ed looked up at him, shocked slightly by his words of wisdom.
"Hey," he chuckled, "I'm the older brother. I'm supposed to be giving you advice."
"Well, we all need some advice every once in awhile." Al said.
When he looked back to Ed, he was asleep with his head on Y/N's shoulder. He seemed to smile from the inside out as he watched his brother's contentedness. He really hoped he could gather the guts to ask him out.
This was really getting ridiculous.
