The Fallen

Jesse thumped to the ground, letting loose a strangled grunt. Another body landed hard next to her, and from their "oomph" she realized it was Amelia. Jesse pushed herself to her feet, her palms feeling the cold, smooth stone brick. On the wall shone a single red stone torch. She reached into her inventory and was relieved to find the amulet was still in there.
"What just happened?" Amelia muttered angrily, spitting her bangs out of her face. She stood up as well.
"We fell." Jesse stated blankly, glancing up at the large hole. She couldn't see the top.
"No! Really?!" Amelia gasped mockingly. "OF COURSE WE FELL."
Jesse rolled her eyes, holding up the amulet to try to see up the hole they fell through. "If you knew the answer, why did you ask?"
Amelia seemed to notice this. Her voice quieted. She cleared her throat. "Erm... yes. Excellent point."
Jesse raised a skeptic eyebrow. Was Amelia actually trying to be nice to her?
That weird thought aside, she turned her focus towards the area around them. She knew the room was large because she couldn't see the walls in the range of the light shining from the amulet. Her heart skipped a beat when she remembered something.
"Hey, didn't Petra and Ivor fall with us?" She craned her neck trying to find them.
Amelia folded her arms. "Last I checked."
The amulet in Jesse's hand began to flicker and splutter. Jesse tried to shake it to get it to work properly, but there was no success. The stunning light representing her on the amulet burnt out, and they were shrouded in darkness. The only source of light available was the red stone torch. Her mouth hung slightly ajar, shocked.
"Um, is it supposed to do that?" Amelia asked, indicating that she was still next to Jesse. Jesse shook her head, and looked at Amelia, who's usually cherry red hair now looked like dark blood.
"The only time the amulet doesn't work is when we're in the Nether or the End." Jesse explained, waving her hands. "But, we're in the real world, and clearly I'm still here. Something must be disrupting the amulet's power." She slipped the amulet back into her inventory.
Her eyes narrowed into slits, and Amelia followed her gaze. The red stone torch revealed a slightly cramped path that weaved left and right; almost like an ordinary cave. Curiosity got the better of her, and she followed the path, which lead deeper underground and had red stone torches lined on the right wall every hundred blocks or so.
"Are you sure this is a good idea?" Amelia whispered harshly.
"I never said it was." Jesse pointed out.
"Great. That makes me feel loads better."
A familiar friendly voice reached her ears, and her heart began to race with glee. "Man, I'm really hungry right now. Like, you have no idea."
Jesse's eyes brightened as she and Amelia rounded a corner. They'd entered what appeared to be a dungeon, where prisoners were kept. Iron bars lined the walls on both sides, and in between to form the walls of each cage. In the whole room, there were only about four torches lighting the place.
"We're never getting out of here."
"Guys, remember what Jesse said: quit complaining and we might actually get somewhere."
Jesse grinned and sprinted towards the cages, despite Amelia's warning. "I'm glad someone remembered that."
A familiar blonde turned to face the iron bars and beamed at her. "Jesse!"
       "Jesse!" Olivia and Axel cried.
"I'm getting you guys out," Jesse promised, beginning to tug on the iron bars.
"I'm so happy to see you," Lukas said, his signature smile on his face. "Once that other Jesse pushed us into that portal... I kept thinking about what could've happened to you."
"We thought you went haywire or something." Axel explained. Jesse could hardly hear either of them since she was so focussed on the iron bars. The whole prison was made of obsidian, so there was no way she'd be able to break through it.
She grunted in frustration. She drew her sword and began to swing at it, but to no avail. The bars wouldn't break.
"Any ideas, Amelia?" Jesse called, still fiddling with the lock. When Amelia didn't answer, she frowned. She looked over her shoulder. "Amelia?"
Amelia was there alright, but she was like a statue. Stiff... unmoving... vacant. She lifted her head and Jesse gasped.
Her eyes were glowing white.
Amelia struck. She swung her diamond sword downward, and Jesse barely rolled out of the way. A clang echoed throughout the dungeon as metal hit metal. Jesse pushed herself from her knees and held her own sword ahead of her.
"Jesse!" Her friends cried. They stared at the battle in horror, unable to do anything to help but forced to watch.
"Amelia, don't listen to a word he says!" Jesse shouted, dodging as she avoided another attack from the red head. Amelia turned around once again to face her.
"Your 'Amelia' cannot hear you," Herobrine spoke through Amelia's mouth. Jesse shivered. "Hand over the amulet."
"You want it, you'll have to kill me for it," Jesse sneered. It was all she could do to defend herself. She didn't want to hurt Amelia. Even though Herobrine was controlling her, it was still her body.
Jesse made to kick, but Amelia's hand grabbed her foot and tossed her into the wall. Jesse groaned, her ribs beginning to bruise as she stood up slowly.
"We need to do something," Lukas said from behind the bars, watching the fight with worry as Jesse took another blow from Amelia.
"Like what? We're trapped!" Olivia exclaimed.
Lukas desperately glanced around. The fight going on behind bars was still going on. Jesse's hair was in a tangled mess, her orange hair barrette ineffective as she fought to keep Amelia off of her. Lukas's blue eyes drifted to the top left corner of the iron bars, where it was weakened. He pointed to it. "There! Axel, lift me up."
Jesse twirled and whirled like a helicopter blade. In just a few days of training she'd gone from adequate fighter to fearless warrior. She was really going to have to owe Isa for this one.
"Axel, higher!" Lukas demanded, and Axel stood up straighter. Lukas was balancing on his shoulders, trying to reach the weakened iron bars. He grabbed onto them, but nearly fell. He found a stable ground to plant his foot on.
"Ow, Lukas! That was my face."
      "Sorry!"
Jesse was beginning to tire. While Amelia had her limits, Herobrine did not. His own movements were as strong and powerful as when they first started the fight. Jesse's movements were getting sluggish. Each time their blades met, hers was pressed closer and closer to her chest. She knew her friends were desperately trying to find a way to escape, as Lukas was standing on Axel's shoulders pulling at the bars. She just had to hold on a little longer.
Amelia managed to snag Jesse's foot, causing her to fall to the floor. Jesse thumped to the ground. The red head's diamond sword plummeted towards her, and Jesse stopped it with her own blade. Amelia had her pinned. It was taking all her energy to keep the blade off her chest.
"It's over, Chosen One," Herobrine's voice sneered. "There is no hope now."
"See, there's a thing about us heroes," Jesse said, panting. "We don't know when to give up."
Amelia's pressure on her sword increased, and the blade pressed closer to Jesse's throat.
"Don't you want to say goodbye to your friends?"
Amelia moved the blade away from Jesse's, causing Jesse to breathe a sigh of relief. But she panicked when she realized she couldn't. Her whole left side was on fire, and she cried out in pain, her vision beginning to blur. Amelia pulled her blade from Jesse's side, and the pain intensified.
      That hurt.
      "No!" Lukas' voice cried. "Jesse!"
She could see his blue eyes in tears. Olivia and Axel were in complete shock, staring at Jesse's limp form on the ground. Jesse wanted nothing more than to go to them. To tell them that everything was going to be okay.
But she couldn't move. The pain was too much.
Amelia stole the amulet from her, twirling the amulet in front of her dying eyes. "I guess I did have to kill you for it. Now, you get to watch, as the people you love burn-"
Jesse felt the weight of Amelia fly off of her. She couldn't focus on anything, but she saw a blur of gold.
      Lukas.

(Thirty Seconds Earlier)

"Come on, come on," Lukas pulled at the bars ferociously, desperate to break free. Jesse was pinned by Amelia, and she was struggling to keep Amelia's knife away from her chest. Lukas could tell that she was exhausted; her bright green eyes were now a dull murky green. Jesse couldn't last much longer. She needed him.
"Come on, come on!" Lukas pleaded, almost tearing apart his fingers trying to rip those bars away. "Break already!"
      "Lukas, hurry!" Axel cried.
      "That's what I'm doing, Axel!"
      "It's over, Chosen One,"
      Lukas rattled the bars harder.
"There is no hope now."
"See, there's a thing about us heroes," Jesse said with a strained voice. "We don't know when to give up."
One of the bars snapped, and a flicker of hope lit inside of Lukas.
"Don't you want to say goodbye to your friends?"
Lukas looked up just in time to see the sword come down. Jesse's eyes went wide, clearly showing pain. Amelia's sword was impaled deep into her side. "No!" Lukas cried. Not Jesse. Anyone but her. "Jesse!"
Tears stung his eyes when he heard her gasp in pain as Amelia ripped out the sword. Blood blossomed from the wound, and Jesse went limp. She was still awake, but the light in her eyes was slowly going out.
At first he didn't know what to feel. Shock, sadness, loss? Then it hit him. It was the very emotion that pumped adrenaline through his veins. The very emotion that sent Aiden spiralling into chaos.
      Anger.
Strength surged through him, and the bars ripped off, enough for them all to slip through. Lukas charged towards Amelia, drawing his iron sword. He tackled the red head, and she went down. Her head banged against the floor, dazing her. Lukas went to hit her again, but Amelia vanished.
The amulet was nowhere to be seen.
"Whoa," Axel said, looking absolutely terrified of him. "That was freaking scary, dude."
     Lukas grinned mischievously. "Thanks."
     "Guys, Jesse!"
Lukas' heart skipped a beat, and the smile was wiped right off his face. Jesse. He immediately ran to where Olivia was by Jesse's side. Jesse looked weak. Her face was pale from blood loss, and her eye lids fluttering like they were too heavy to keep open.
Lukas knelt by her side and gripped her hand. It was cold. "Hang in there, Jesse. You'll be alright."
"He took the amulet," Jesse said weakly, turning her head softly towards him. "I couldn't stop him."
"Hey," Lukas assured. "You did everything you could."
"We need to get help," Olivia suggested.
"Axel, go shout for Petra and Ivor." Lukas commanded.
Axel didn't hesitate, and he sprinted back up the pathway, on a hunt for Petra and Ivor. Lukas could hear him yelling their names. It wasn't long before he returned with them.
"Hey, guys, what'd we mi-" Petra said, but then she spotted Jesse on the floor.
"Hey." Jesse greeted with a weak smile. Her eyes were half closed.
"Jesse!" Petra exclaimed, getting to her knees next to Olivia. "What happened?"
"Amelia was possessed by Herobrine," Lukas explained. "She stabbed her."
"Show me." Ivor demanded surprisingly. The others made room for him, and Ivor examined it. Lukas could see that it went in deep, but not deep enough to hit any vital organs. Her armour had helped with that. Ivor got up again. "I can heal her, but we'll need to take her to my lab. I have one that actually isn't far from here. I thought I saw a few horses before we came in as well."
"How many labs does one guy need?" Olivia muttered. Ivor glared at her.
"What are we waiting for?" Lukas said urgently, not caring at the moment about how many labs Ivor had. All he cared about was saving Jesse's life.
They lifted her up, and he felt her go limp. She must've passed out. They rushed out of the dungeon at full speed, heading for the exit.
Hang on, Jesse. Lukas pleaded. Hang on.
