Martha continued down the hill. I followed, hoping that she wouldn't pass my parents. If they found out....... I would be grounded for the next two weeks. But, surely, they wouldn't ground their daughter the day before her birthday? Martha was heading inland, far away from my parents. Phew! Martha suddenly stopped. The path continued around a huge tree, then back the way we came. This must be the cycling track. Martha turned left, and led on. I hesitated. It was getting late. Mum and dad would be worried sick if I didn't return soon. Martha paused at the edge of the thick undergrowth. She turned. "Too dark. Best show you in the morning." I nodded and began to walk away. I heard a rustle, and looked back. Martha was gone.
I woke early the next day. Even though it was my birthday, I wanted to find out about the billabong. Silent, I open the tent and run as fast as I could without making a sound to the place Martha disappeared. I turn around the corner. Martha is already there. Martha had her hair in a tight bun, wearing a sunshine yellow top and grass green shorts. I glance at my sky blue singlet and white shorts. My hair is still in a fish tail. Martha smiles. "You came. There is not much time. Follow me." I follow her through the bush. Several minutes later, Martha and I entered a clearing. A small camp was set up, with a fire, tent and an old chair. A black figure exits the tent. It was the old native I had meet at the reception the day before. She nodded to Martha and Martha nodded back. Then she spoke. "So, the girl came."
