Chapter 9: Taken

     The next morning, Nicky wakes up in bed, only to notice that Bourne is not in bed with her. She gets up and heads out of the room, and finds Bourne having a coffee and using his laptop with a focused face.

"What are you doing?" Nicky nicely asks Bourne with curiosity.

"I hacked into CIA and MI6 databases to find out more about SPECTRE. We need to know as much as we can about them and their operations in order to be prepared next time," Bourne explains.

"Did you find anything?" Nicky asks.

"Not a lot, but enough for me to have an idea of just how dangerous this organization is to the world. They've made deals regarding nuclear weapons trade, oil trade, and more illegal businesses. They have ties everywhere," Bourne explains to Nicky. 

"What are we going to do?" Nicky asks.

"An old friend in the CIA might be able to identify any sleepers in the London area, we'll start there, see what the sleeper knows," Bourne clarifies. 

"How do we reach this friend?" Nicky questions him. The next day, they arrive at a relatively old, bi-level house. Bourne walks up to the entrance first and knocks on the door. He hears footsteps approaching the door and a handgun being cocked.

"Who the fuck is it?" An Irish man asks the two from inside. Nicky looks at Bourne. 

"This is Jason Bourne," he states. He then hears the gun being put on a table and footsteps approaching the door.  The man opens the door, revealing himself as Bryan Mills. 

"Bryan Mills?" Bourne, looking confused, asks the man.

"One and only," Bryan responds.

"I was hoping to find Felix Leiter here," Bourne says to him. 

"Left for the States months ago. I got the house when I returned to the CIA. My, uh, daughter always wanted to go to London," Bryan responds nicely. 

"We need your help," Bourne announces to him. Bryan lets the two into the safe house. They sit at the kitchen table, where Bryan was having his afternoon coffee. 

"What can I do for the infamous Jason Bourne?" Bryan asks with pride.

"What do you know about SPECTRE?" Bourne asks. Bryan stops sipping his coffee and then proceeds to put down his cup. 

"I was forced out of retirement to help answer that very question. I came here for my daughter, step-son, and grandchild, only to be dragged into investigating the fucking organization for the CIA. I put my family in danger by taking the job, so I had to move my family the hell out of here. Look, I don't know much about SPECTRE but enough to know that you two should steer clear of them," Bryan explains to them.

"They're after us, I need to know why. I need to know everything about them," Bourne explains. 

"I'm sorry, I'm afraid I can't be much of help," Bryan says as he proceeds to get up. 

"Okay, how about any suspects? Do you know anyone who may be associated with the organization, any leads at all," Bourne desperately asks. 

"I know of one man who may have recently joined their ranks, and I think you know him," Bryan explains. 

"Who?" Bourne asks with curiosity. 

"Eric Byer, the head of the NRAG," Bryan reveals. Nicky looks shocked. Bourne looks at her.

"Why the hell would he join such a dangerous organization?" Nicky asks him.

"SPECTRE has influence everywhere, the government, world leaders, politicians, you name it," Bryan answers. "The real question you should be asking is what are they doing together."

"They're going to mass produce more enhanced soldiers," Bourne responds immediately. Bryan looks at them, worried.

"How can anyone stop them if they build an army of enhanced soldiers?" Nicky blurts out.

"I hear the British government has a plan to take down the organization and it's heads for good. They call it Operation Blackstone. The British army and MI6 plan to attack SPECTRE at all of their hideouts, all at once. But I highly doubt it will work," Bryan says to them. Bourne looks at Nicky. Suddenly, a gas grenade is thrown into the house through the kitchen window, and it explodes smoke. 

"Get out of here!" Bryan tells them. However, Bourne doesn't listen. He takes out his gun and opens fire at the attacker's direction. The attacker fires back with a fully automatic weapon, and the three take cover. The attacker kicks the door open, revealing himself as Brummer. Bourne gets up and lunges towards Brummer. Brummer raises his gun to shoot Bourne, but Bourne pulls the gun out of his hand and punches him. They start to fight, violently. Bryan leads Nicky out of the house. Brummer takes out a knife while Bourne grabs a fork. Brummer lunges at Bourne, attempting to stab him, but Bourne blocks his various angles and moves. Bourne attempts to stab Brummer in the face, but he is blocked. However, he ends up stabbing Brummer's hand but is kicked to the ground. Bourne gets up and grabs a pillow from the couch. Brummer comes at him with his knife, but Bourne blocks his attacks with the pillow. Meanwhile, Bryan and Nicky are impatiently waiting outside. Suddenly, Bryan turns to Nicky.
"Stay here," he says to her. He heads into the house, picks up a gun from under a small flower table, and heads into the living room to see Bourne and Brummer fighting. Brummer pushes Bourne into a flat screen television and spots Bryan. He lunges towards Bryan, who shoots him in the shoulder. He kicks the gun out of Bryan's hand and then punches him in the face. They start fist fighting, but Brummer is clearly stronger and faster than Bryan. Bourne regains consciousness and sees Bryan losing to Brummer. He sees his gun and picks it up. His vision is still blurred but he aims at the two. He has flashes to previous assassinations from his time with the CIA and Treadstone. A moment from the flashback causes him to fire blindly. Luckily, he manages to hit Brummer, and Brummer goes down. Bourne regains his vision and full awareness.
"Are you okay? Is Nicky okay?" Bourne asks Bryan.
"I'm okay. The girl is waiting outside, like I asked her to." Bourne heads outside and sees Nicky, who was looking really worried. However, upon seeing Bourne unhurt and okay, she begins to calm.
"Are you okay?" Bourne asks her. She nods. However, Bourne notices that his left hand feel wet. He looks at his hand and sees blood. He then looks at Nicky.
"It's a graze, I'll be okay," Nicky says to him.
"She needs a doctor!" Bryan, who is standing at the door, yells out. Bourne nods.
"Check on our attacker, you need to get rid of him," Bourne tells him. Bryan goes back inside as Bourne looks. Bryan walks into the living room to see Brummer missing. He runs back out.
"He's gone!" He yells out to him. Bourne doesn't look like he wants to worry about Brummer. He instead focuses on taking Nicky to a nearby hospital in their car. They get into the car as Bryan approaches them.
"Thank you for your help," Bourne says to him.
"Good luck, Mr. Bourne," Bryan responds. Bryan heads inside as Bourne and Nicky drive off.
"I don't know how we're going to take down an organization as wired as that," Nicky says to Bourne.
"We'll figure it out," Bourne responds to reassure her of their chances.
