The Day Things Went Wrong

I woke up one morning, letting out a soft sigh as my phone shined to life. No new text notifications. It had been almost 2 weeks since I'd seen Gundam, and I was really starting to miss him. He didn't respond to any of my calls or texts, so he could have been dead for all I knew.

I got up and got ready for the day, eating my breakfast alone at the table. I glanced at the nearby calendar, noticing the date with a heavy sigh. An exact week from today, school would start again. I was starting at a new school, along with my brother, but I could not be less enthusiastic. I was going to miss my old friends, but there was nothing I could do to help it.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed. I eagerly picked it up, hoping it was Gundam calling. To my disappointment, it was only an unknown number. I answered the call, sighing hesitantly as I did so.

"Hello? This is (y/n) speaking," I explained as I put my dishes in the sink.

"Ah, yes. You're the (y/n) attending Hope's Peak this semester, aren't you?" A male voice responded.

"Yes, that's me. How may I help you?"

"We would just like to inform you that you will be in the main course building, in classroom 77B. Orientation will be held after you settle into your class, so you won't need to worry about that. Just be sure to arrive to your classroom on time."

"Understood," I complied. "Thank you for calling."

I hung up the phone and pressed it against my face, letting out a weary sigh. In just a week, I would be surrounded by people that I didn't even know that well. I was doomed. I didn't have the easiest time making friends, and I could only imagine what hell awaited me.

"What's wrong, (y/n)-san?" Hajime asked, his voice muffled by the toothbrush in his mouth. He held an entire empty carton of orange juice in his hand, a towel draped on his body. What a mess.

"Just worried about school starting," I admitted. "And I haven't heard from Gundam since the last time I saw him."

"Hey, it's ok," he consoled me as he put his hand on my back. "Sometimes people leave our lives for no reason. And it sucks, don't get me wrong, but maybe it could be for the better. You just shouldn't let it get to you, kid."

"I'm t-trying," I stammered, my voice faltering. "He was my only f-friend, you know?"

"Don't be so worried," he ordered. "Things might seem dim now, but you have the capacity to make so many more friends. And I bet you'll find someone who treats you like you actually matter. To be honest, I never was too fond of that Gundam kid. Seemed kind of weird to me. But there's gotta be someone out there who you are meant to be with!"

"I guess," I responded, pulling him into a hug. "Thanks, bro."

"Any time," he laughed. "Not everything that comes out of my mouth is pointless garbage, I promise you."

I suited up in my brown blazer, combing my hair in the mirror. Today was the day. With the grab of my bag and the farewell from my brother, I was off. It was time to see what Hope's Peak Academy had in store for me.

I wandered around the hallways of the building, looking for the right room. 77, 77, 77. I couldn't find it anywhere. Was I even in the right building?

Suddenly, I noticed a boy standing in the hallway. As many of the halls were empty, I figured I could ask them for help.

"Excuse me," I greeted the boy. "Would you happen to know where classroom 77B is?"

"AHAHAHAHA!" The boy laughed, suddenly turning around. Instantly, I recognized who he was.

"Gundam?!"
