Needless to say, Brookline was pissed. He wanted to know how it happened, where it hapoened, and why it happened. As if I actually could answer any of his questions.
"Come on, Brook. There's no need to get frustrated. There's probably a logical answer for all of this", my mom says before turning to the doctor. "Sir, can you please shed some light on what's happening? Why is my boy like this?".
"Well, like I said. He was in a crash, he collided with the door and the belt sliced against his neck. And it damaged his nerves. There isn't much more to say", the doctor says softly before looking at me.
"What about the person in the car, is what I think they're trying to say", the nurse says. My mother shakes her head. They knew who was in the car, they knew who's fault it was. I didn't understand what they were asking either.
The doctor looks between us. I give him a gentle look and he rests his hand on my leg. "I don't know what else to say. I'm really sorry what happens. But we need to discuss further surgery plans", the doctor says.
My mom continued to look shocked, but my father had a simple look of pity. I didn't want my father's pity. I wanted him to simply understand that this was not my fault. Then I looked to Brookline, who was silent. He had a look and expression I couldn't read.
"Mr and Mrs. Judson", he finally says. "The doctor is simply trying to speak to you about your son. I understand him, but all you seem to be worried about is who was in the car. That f*cking kid who I don't even know did this. That's what they said. And when I find him, wherever he is, I'm going to beat the shit out of him.
I looked at him, as did everyone else in the room. "I don't support violence, but.." the doctor looks at me. "He did try and blame this on your friend. Just don't let him bleed on the hospital floors. Do it outside, I can show you a spot where no one would see".
The doctor nudges him gently but she was smiling. "I'm only joking", he says, but send a not so secret wink to Brookline.
"You mentioned discussing surgery. What are the chances of the surgery? What are the chances of my child surviving the night?", my mom interrogates the doctor.
"At the moment, in this hospital bed, your son is fine. No danger of death. But without the surgery, your son will never be able to walk again. He won't be able to feel things, which is so dangerous. But it's not certain that the surgery will work. The worst thing that could happen is his nerves would be damaged completely. Then there's no chance of him feeling anything, which limits him very much so", the doctor replies, then looks at me.
My mother covers her mouth and my father wraps his arms around her. "When can you do this surgery?", my father finally opens his mouth.
"We have an open O.R. We could have him back there in 45 minutes and out in 2-4 hours. It's all according to how it goes", the doctor says. My father nods in understanding.
"I need to get some papers for you to sign. Then we can get him prepped and moving. I'll be doing his surgery, and I'll have my nurse here make sure Brookline doesn't make the other boy bleed on my clean floors", he nods.
I almost smile when I see Brookline just cross his arms. I watch the doctor walk off to get the papers. My parents don't try to talk to me. My mother just sits down and puts a hand to her head. It wasn't a worry for her son, it was a worry for..her.
Brookline comes over to me and puts a hand on my arm. I look up to him and see a single tear fall from his eye. "Hey", he whispers. I just continue to stare. It wasn't like I could give him a greeting back. "I need you to do me a favor. Yeah?".
I blink slowly and he continues. "I need you to live. My life can't go on without you. I don't care if you're restrained the rest of your life. Just...live".
He leans down and presses his lips to mine. I don't react, (as if I could), and the doctor comes back. The papers are signed, I'm prepped, then before I know it, I'm being taken to the operating room.
The last thing I see before I'm going through the doors is Alex walking up to my parents. And Brookline pushing him.
