Little scratchy noises appeared all around her and soon enough she felt soft fur stroking her trembling fingers. Cinderella calmed herself down, just enough to see the bunch of little mice tolling around in the ashes. It must have been around 15 of them and every one carried a small black pearl out of the ashes into the bowl she prepared for them and returned to the black pile to search for the next one.
Cinderella almost couldn't believe her eyes. This couldn't be real, could it? It was impossible that the two mice from outside understood what she had been talking and brought her help.
"Why....?" She asked into the nowhere but all of a sudden the mice turned to her and held up a small bread crumb.
"You may have not noticed before but mice are very loyal and grateful animals."
The voice startled her and she flinched around, facing something humanlike but it was neither man nor woman. It smiled.
"Baptiste and Romeo asked me to help you."
The little two bony mice from before climbed onto Cinderella's lap.
"They told me that you gave them your food and that you have a wish that cannot be fulfilled."
Cinderella looked up to what she thought was some kind of fairy.
The fairy looked down upon Cinderella. "I am here to grant you that wish." It announced and sat down on the bordeaux coloured sofa with wooden framework.
Baptiste and Romeo hopped off Cinderella's lap and she eagerly joined the other on the sofa.
"You could?" She asked, her soft voice full of hope. It nodded once.
"I can turn you into a boy, I can give you a beautiful ball gown, I can give you a carriage to bring you to the castle and I can give you a proper invitation. But beware because at midnight - exactly at midnight - the magic will fade and you'll return to your current form.
One night with the one you adore so dearly and as the human you really are. Is this enough for you?"
It looked into Cinderella's determined eyes and it had its answer.
"Stand up." It demanded from her while doing so itself.
Cinderella followed the order willingly. They stood face to face and the fairy lifted its slender hand.
The moment its index finger touched her forehead it happened.
Magical strings of light pink and blue streamed out of the point where their skins connected. They made a turn and swirled together at the very top of her head where the transformation started. Her hair became shorter while the features of her face sharpened. Her shoulders turned broader and she herself grew taller. Her chest flattened and she could feel her vocal cords lengthen.
The ball gown consisted of black trousers, a white shirt and a gorgeous jacket out of silk. It was sparkling magenta that faded into a bright lilac at the bottom. The golden ornaments at the shoulder pads and at the front reminded of the ones at the prince's carriage and the colour of his eyes.
The invitation letter that appeared on the small coffee table had a creamy colour just like the one Cinderella pulled out of the light blue envelope this noon.
But Cinderella wasn't Cinderella anymore. She was now a he.
He rushed towards the mirror and gasped for air when he finally, for the first time, saw himself how he should be. How he really was.
He turned to the fairy with glazed eyes. "Thank you!"
The newly made boy jumped at his own deep voice and touched his neck carefully as if this wonderful change could suddenly collapse from his fingers' impact.
The fairy cane closer and held the invitation letter for him to grab.
"Go. Time's running."
He gladly obeyed and took the letter outside where he realized - he still had no horse.
"Ah, I forgot that." The fairy who silently followed him announced and hurried past him along with Baptiste and Romeo.
"Hush, hush!" It waved the two mice in front of the vehicle and moved its hands like a maestro leading a whole symphony orchestra. Again, sparkly strings were released from its fingers and wove a net around them two. To his surprise the network of glistening magic enclosed another object: a small, brightly orange pumpkin that laid hidden under some thicket.
The things began to swell and grow until Baptiste and Romeo stood on the road as a pair of seemingly shining greys that waited eagerly to haul the light violet carriage which was oddly pumpkin shaped towards the royal castle.
He hugged the fairy tightly goodbye and entered the carriage that took off as soon as the door closed.
The two former mice casted forward with everything they had, enjoying the height and strength they possessed for the time being. The scenery flew by in the light of the cold silver moon and soon they arrived at the castle's stall where no other than Mauritio held the door open for him.
He graciously stepped out of the carriage and lent Mauritio his hand to help him. Mauritio's eyes grew wide and he just stood at stare for that couldn't be the girl he knew for so long.
The invitation was handed over and the name on it was as unique as just one name was.
