"What happened to you out there, son?" Josephine took his finished plate and put it in her sink. "I woke up in the middle of the night hearing all this groaning thinking my dead husband was back to haunt me & there you were; looking beaten with no food in your belly and bruises all over. I would've taken you to the hospital but as a former nurse, I know not everyone has insurance. So I patched you up myself."

"Where am I," he spoke in a scratchy voice.

The robust woman pulled back the nearest curtain. "Santa Cruz."

Nate was stunned & began patting his clothes. "Wh-where's my phone?"

"Wasn't one on ya, no identification either. Before Nathan, you were just a John Doe. I'm Josephine, by the way."

"...Thank you, Josephine. I-I have to get back." Nate attempts to stand up but he felt sore in multiple spots.

"Easy now." She helped him sit back down. "I called my grandson Joe, he's on his way & he's gonna take you to wherever you came from or he'll get you a bus ticket if it's too far."

"A phone?" His face lit up. "Can I- Can I use it?"

"Sure thing."

She hands him her outdated cell phone but for the life of him, he couldn't remember anyone's number.

"What's wrong?"

"I just can't- I can't remember phone numbers right now." He handed her phone back to her.

"Of course not," she chuckled. "Everyone depends on their smartphones too much to do the thinking for them. So when you're in bad shape like you are, you can forget about it. But I do hope you know where you're from. You're a nice young man but I miss my bed. I can't sleep on a hammock forever. I'm getting older & that means back problems are on the rise."

Nate tries to remember how he got to this point; how he got to Santa Cruz, of all places. Five hours away from home. He remembered running through the woods after escaping his captors. He remembered finding a road through a clearing & hitching a ride with 3 people who untied him. But then he remembered waking up in that car hours later in the middle of nowhere; they beat him, robbed him, and kicked him out the car. And then he remembered stumbling into the trailer park, ultimately collapsing.

"Beverly Hills," he cleared his throat. "That's where I'm from."

"Oh dear," she shook her head. "So you're not a drifter? People must be looking for you. I wouldn't even know. As you can see, I have no TV, I haven't turned on my radio in 5 years. Just my records. Well you just sit tight, Joe should be here in about 30 minutes. I'll put together some more food for your trip."

It was refreshing to receive kindness from a stranger. He was shocked he wasn't heading for the hills by now. Before her, strangers were clearly cold toward him. But not Josephine, she was the sweetest.
