As soon as we get to the hospital, Lilly is rushed into the operating room. I follow the stretcher as far as I can down the corridor until I am asked to stop and wait. I walk to the other side of the hall and sit down on the floor, feeling defeated. I am crying my eyes out by now and am so worried for Lilly.
I hear footsteps running my way and my name being called. I look up and call back almost inaudibly, "Phil, Dan, Ellie. I'm here."
The pain I had inside was too much now and I couldn't take it anymore. The three got up to me just as I was about to run.
"Maddie," Phil sounded desperate as he called to me. "What happened last time? What's going on?"
I let Phil hug me and I never wanted him to let go. I wanted all of this to be a dream. I wished Lilly would be fine. I wished it was me in this state instead of her.
Dan, Phil, Ellie, and I went to the waiting room as I explained what had happened last time Lilly fought someone.
"...and then she ended up in the hospital in a coma for a few days which seemed like years and the doctors told me that she can't handle anything like that again and if it happened to call right away because she might not make it..." I finished the last sentence, a sobbing wreck.
Ellie was too young to understand what was happening. All she knew was that Dan, Phil, and I were crying so she gave us all a big hug, making us all feel slightly better.
"Lilly's family?" a nurse called from the hallway.
I slowly stood up and took a step towards her. "She doesn't have any family except for her sister, ma'am."
"Oh. I see. And you are?"
"Maddie. We share an apartment. She is family to me."
"Alright. Come with me."
I follow the nurse, walking slowly behind her until she stops at a door. I look at the patient's name on the wall and of course, it shows Lilly's name in bold letters.
My breath hitches as she opens the door. Tears fall from my eyes as I look at all of the machines hooked up to her at once.
"Her operation went fine, now is just a matter of waiting for her to wake up. Would you like me to get your friends here?"
"Please," I said weakly.
The nurse stepped out of the room as I took a seat on the chair next to Lilly's bed and started to cry.
I took Lilly's hand and whispered to her, "Lilly, please don't go. We need you. Dan, Ellie, Phil, they all need you. Lilly I need you. Please don't leave us. I know it hurts you and I know you are struggling with this. You get the final decision here if you stay or leave us. Make the right choice please."
"SISSY!!" Ellie yells as she comes through the door with Dan and Phil. I cry harder at this sight.
Ellie is so happy to see Lilly, but doesn't know what is happening.
All four of us sit in silence, listening to the beeping of the monitors.
We all sit here for hours, doctors and nurses coming in and out of the room, all checking on Lilly.
It gets to be 9:00 when Phil decides to take Ellie back to the flat to get some sleep and Dan says he will stay with me. I know well why Dan chose to stay, and I had to be there for Lilly.
Dan fell asleep at midnight and I was still awake sitting intently at Lilly's bedside. One o'clock comes, then two. I notice the monitors start to slow down and my heart rate picks up.
"No, no, no," I whisper to myself realizing what's happening.
The beeps become longer and longer.
Tears begin to fall from my eyes and I hear one final, ongoing beep.
Dan wakes up and realizes what happened. I'm standing next to the bed, shaking violently as I cry. Dan puts a comforting hand on my back, but I twist out of the way and run out of the room going outside of the building.
"AHHHHHHHH!" I screamed my heart out.
Tears blurred my vision, my heart was racing, I was looking around for somewhere to run when I notice headlights are coming my way.
The car coming towards me screeches to a halt and out jumps Phil. I run towards Phil and hug him so much, my tears staining his gray t shirt.
"I'm so sorry, Maddie." Phil was crying too.
I noticed that Ellie wasn't with him so I asked, "Where the hell is Ellie?"
"Your neighbor Justin is watching her."
Phil and I cried as we walked back into the hospital to find Dan, a mess on the floor beside Lilly's bed. The sight tore at my heart as I knelt down beside him and hugged him as if it would help.
Nothing would change this night in our minds.
*DAN'S POV*
It's all my fault. She's gone because of me. I should've fought off that man. Why didn't I hold her back enough. I should've gone after him. He's going to get it. I will avenge Lilly's death.
*Maddie's POV*
Dan had a look of pure rage and disgust in his eyes. I was too afraid to ask why, but soon figured it out.
Everything was taken care of and we decided to go home. We didn't stay at my flat though. Phil walked inside and picked up Ellie, telling her we were having a sleepover at his place.
That was the last time any of us went into that apartment building or that hospital ever again. We all knew we could never forget what had happened.
I thought my life was over...
THE END!!!!!
Oh my gosh. That ending just killed me inside. I'm not listening next time I have to write a death like that again. (you know who you are) Do you guys want a sequel? I don't know if that would be a good idea because some of us are now damaged from the end (ME!!!)
I hope you enjoyed though.
