INTRODUCTION

According to Greek Myth, Icarus and his father, Daedalus, were imprisoned on the island of Crete by King Minos. King Minos knew Daedalus to be a great inventor and commanded him to make weapons so that King Minos could defeat his enemies in battle.

Daedalus wanted a better life for his son, so he invented wings that could help them to fly from the island. The wings' feathers were held together by wax—light enough for flight, but strong enough to hold their weight.

"Be careful my son," Daedalus said. "If you fly too low to the ocean, the moisture will make the wings too heavy. And if you fly too high, the wax will melt."

Icarus nodded and fastened the wings to his arms. Soon, he was swooping and soaring high into the clouds. He so enjoyed the flight that he had forgotten the lessons of his father.

And he flew too close to the sun.
