I lay on the grass, looking up at the stars. I couldn't sleep. It had been a close call today. This walker had been so quiet, not like the others. It grabbed my foot while I was on my way back to my old home, the place I used to feel safe. It reminded me of the night it began...

We were trapped in the house, my parents, my brother and me. The walkers broke in while I was still asleep. Even though it was 2 months ago, I can still remember the screams of pain that woke me up. A dirty, boney hand with yellow nails grabbed my mother and sunk it's teeth into her arm, my dad tried to save her but it was too late she was devoured in seconds by the herd that had managed to break in. My dad had picked up a kitchen knife and stabbed one of them in the heart but it didn't even react.. It kept reaching forward for my dad's arms. My dad ran to the back door to escape and we followed, we ran up the street and noticed house number 37's door was open so we decided to hide there until the walkers got distracted. My dad bravely went in first.Upon entering the house myself it became clear we made a huge mistake. Before I even had time to react my dad was being devoured by a group of walkers who had just finished making a meal out of my neighbour. I remember hearing Bradley cry and then he was gone... now I realise he'd ran off in fear. I grabbed the knife that my dad had dropped and climbed onto the roof to see if Bradley was anywhere to be seen. It was no use. I was alone.

As I lay under the stars I thought of Bradley and wondered if it was possible for a 13 year old boy to still be alive two months after the apocalypse had began. A tear rolled down my face as I remembered all the games we used to play together before the world went to shit. I shut my eyes to stop the sound of my tears drawing walkers towards me and suddenly I was asleep in the grass, under the stars and in a sound free world.
