I walked towards Terminus clutching onto my newly acquired weapon. I turned the corner to see them, the herd. I stopped moving and stared at them without being noticed. Some were missing arms and others were missing jaws, at least this meant I couldn't be bitten right? The way to terminus was blocked and I had no other choice but to turn around and abandon my mission. I didn't know where I was going next, all I knew was that if I didn't find a group and fast I would sooner or later be one of the undead.
Hours passed, or days? or years? I didn't even know anymore. I felt my legs ache, my heart burn and my eyes begin to shut. I was close to giving up. I squinted my eyes and saw metal poles in the distance.. Is that a gate? I thought to myself. Whatever it was I couldn't just walk away without investigating, so I headed towards the strange structure. As I grew closer I began to hear sounds but not the sounds of the undead, sounds of talking and discussing, sounds of humans!
"There's got to be some nice people there" I said softly to myself before taking a deep breath and walking up to the gates.
"Mercy for the lost" "Vengeance for the plunderers" I read from the sign I was now close enough too. Suddenly, a shadow passed by me and I saw a man wearing a leather jacket in the corner of my eye. I was afraid, I pulled the gun which contained no ammo up to the man's head. I wanted to scare him away from me, I'd forgotten what a healthy human looked like. My hands were shaking.
"Put it down.... now" The man commanded
I did what he said, I knew I needed to be accepted here because I couldn't survive on my own.
"Who are you?" He asked me all of sudden
"Alicia" I responded
"I'm Daryl" He said. While holding out his hand for me to shake it. I did.
"How many walkers have you killed?" Daryl urged
"Too many" I said with a slight laugh.
Daryl kept a straight face and looked me dead in the eyes.
"How many people you killed?" Was the next question to leave Daryl's mouth.
"None" I bluntly replied
"Why?" He said softly
"Because Daryl, enough things are trying to kill us and I feel only people who have done something worth dying for should do so"
Daryl stayed silent and pulled the same face as he did when I first came across him five minutes ago. He opened the gates and I was in what the sign insisted was 'Alexandria'. I couldn't believe it, people were actually surviving here like nothing ever happened.
Another man approached me and Daryl, he looked concerned.
"What are you doing?" He angrily said to Daryl
"Rick, it's fine I've asked the questions. She's not a threat"
"She's a child" the man referred to as 'Rick' shouted
"So is Carl" Daryl mumbled while walking away.
Rick stared at me and his angry face turned into a smile. I thought about this boy who was just mentioned. Carl. Such a nice name..
"The house a few doors up. That's mine. My family's.. My son Carl's there, Michonne too. They can show you around if you like. You're one of us" Rick said kindly
"Thank you" I added before walking towards the house.
The door of Rick's house opened slowly and a young boy, about the same age as me walked onto the porch laying his arms onto the fencing and looking off into the distance. He had the most beautiful hair, it came right down to the end of his face. I could just about see his bright blue charming eyes from where I was standing but he couldn't see mine or me.. He wore a blue checked flannel shirt over a plain t shirt with three buttons. On his head he wore a brown, slightly battered sheriff's hat. Seeing the boy in the hat made me feel safe even if it was just for this moment.
