The next morning Darren, Tommy, Alan, and I were waiting outside of the school yard for Steve to come with the tickets, but there was no sigh of him by the time the bell rang for class, so we had to go in.
"I bet he didn't get them," Tommy said, "he's hiding because he didn't get them!"
"Steve isn't like that," I said, "He's not a chicken like you.'
"Hey!" Tommy said, offended.
We were all miserable.
We all walked back to class, thinking that Steve had let us down. "I really thought he was going to get them." Alan said with a sad look on his face. "Stop saying that!" I yelled, "I know Steve! He wouldn't do that to us!". I was starting to down on Steve.
We all sat in class, just staring at the door waiting for Steve to walk in. He never did. But about 2 minutes left into class, Steve walked in! We all jumped out of our chairs and gave him a big hug. "I thought you weren"t going to come!" I said, still hugging him. "Babe, have I ever let you down?" Steve said, smiling at me.
"Get back in your seat's, now!" Mrs. Quinn said, and we all immediantley sat down. "So, did you get the tickets?" Darren asked, "Yeah, but there is some bad news.. I'll tell you guys after school." Steve said, gathering his supplies for next period. "Aw come on Steve," I said, "tell us now!". "Too many people."
Next period was science, I only had this period with Darren. "So what do you think the bad news is?" I asked Darren, "Erm- I don't know, maybe he didn't have enough money to get us all one.." Darren said, staring at the ground. "I hope we get to go.. it would be REEEALLY cool.." I said, frowning. "Well.. guess we'll find out after school. c'mon, we got to get to class." "Kay."
The rest of the day went pretty smooth. Next period was with Steve and Tommy, we annoyed the HELL out of Steve, trying to get him to tell us the 'Bad News', but all he ever said was "Too many people.". I was getting tired of that same reaction every time we asked about it. It's like he was ignoring all of us. Soon came lunch break, and we all met out on the yard. "Come on Steve!" Darren cried, trying to get an answer out of him, "Teeeeeeelllllllllllllll uuuuuuuuuusssssssss!" "I said no! Guys there are too many people around! Ok! I'll tell you guys later when every one has left!" Steve screamed, his eyes widened and he looked angry. Steve has major anger problems but I don't see a reason to get mad at this? Why is he mad?! I honestly didn't know, I was just hoping he doesn't go on a mad rampage.
"Ok. Ok man, calm down." Tommy said holding his hand in the air that resembled stop. "I am calm!!" Steve yelled. "Uh guys, it's time to go back to class.." Alan said, I think he was scared of Steve too, at the moment. Next period was our last period, THANK GOD!!!! We were so close to finding the news! This period was with Darren, Steve, Tommy, and Alan. "What the hell are you doing Steve?" Darren asks Steve. Steve was cutting up a bunch of pieces of paper for some reason. "You'll find out later." Steve said, grinning but not looking up from the slips of paper he was cutting. "Cameo, don't you know that hats aren't allowed in this school?" Mr. Dorton asks. Darren flinched and looked at me, his eyes widened with fear for me. He new about my cat ears, and he was worried for me. I started to shiver, I was struck with fear. If I took off my hat, everyone would see how much of a freak I am. But then I remembered! Even though my mom hates me she still doesn't want anyone to know about me being half-cat. My mom sent a note to my school the first day I came here, it read ;
"To whom ever it may concern,
Please allow Cameo to wear hats to school, she has bald spots on top of her head, and she does not want anybody to see it. I will send a check if I must, just please allow her to wear her hats to school. "
I remembered it! "Actually Mr. Dorton, I have a note that allows me to have my hat on!" I said smiling with relief, digging in my schoolbag form the old note. I handed it to Mr. Dorton, he read it slowly and gave it back to me. "Very well then, you may keep it on." He said walking back to the dry erase board.
As I walked back to my seat, Darren was smiling in relief. "I was so scared for you!" He whispered, bro-fisting me. "It's all good!" I said winking at him. Steve glared at both of us with confusion, then he shook his head and went back to cutting up his slips of paper.
"Today we are learning about World War ll." Mr. Dorton said. Instantley, me and Steve both picked our heads up. We looked at each other, with a dangerous smile. "Did he just say..?" Steve whispered to me. "Yeah!" I said to Steve, still smiling. Steve's face started to get red and he locked like he was melting into a pool of feelings "Ahhhh, isn't war just the coolest?"
"Oh great, you guys have no idea how insane you look right now!" Tommy said, laughing. "And your point is?" Steve said. We looked like psychopaths! This was going to be the best period ever! Me and Steve can talk about how we know all about the war! But then, me and Steve's joy was cut off by the sound of hell, the bell for the end of the day.
"Never have I ever, hated that bell in my life, more than I do right now...." I said, angry but sad. Steve was too, but he didn't say anything he just had an angry look on his face. Wait I forgot.. now Steve can tell us the news!!
Once everybody had left school, me, Darren, Alan, Tommy and Steve stayed in the yard and talked. "Ok Steve! Spill it!" I said to him. "Alright, alright. I got the tickets alright," He said, but paused and looked at the ground, "but I only got 3 tickets.." "WHAT!?!?" we all screamed. "YOU HAD ENOUGH MONEY FOR SEVEN TICKETS AND YOU ONLY GOT THREE!?!?" I said, smaking Steve in the arm. "Ow- hey that hurt! -" He said, rubbing his arm "you didn't let me finish! I know I could have gotten all of you tickets, but I couldn't. They said only 3 tickets were left, they were almost sold out, so I took the left over tickets..." We all bowed our heads in sadness, just staring at the ground. "...But I have an idea.." Steve said, we all shot our heads up and stared at him, waiting for his idea.
"Remember those pieces of paper I was cutting up in class?" Steve asked, reaching into his school bag and pulled out a bunch of slips of paper. "Church, can I use your hat?" he asked, I stood there frozen. I couldn't give him my hat! He would see the freak that I really am. "S-sorry, implanted into my head." I said, trying to make it sound like a joke. "Just give me the hat." He said. "Wait Steve, here, can you use my empty lunch kit?" Darren asked, of course Darren came to my rescue. "Sure." Steve said grabbing the emty tin lunch kit.
"Alright guys,' Steve said putting the slips of paper and the 3 tickets into the lunch box, "I'm gonna shake this up, and you guys will close your eyes and pick a slip of paper, all the pieces of paper are the same size as the tickets so it will be a total mystery, who ever gets the three tickets will go to the cirque, I'll do it too." "No," I said before we all put our hand in the unchbox, "Steve should get one of the tickets," They all looked at me like they saw my cat ears, "Imean - he did sneak out late at night and went through all of that trouble just to get tickets. He should definatley get one." I said smiling at Steve. "Yeah I guess so, if it weren't for Steve, we wouldn't even know about this cirque." Darren said walking by steve and smiling at him. "Works for me!" Steve said picking around in the lunch box for one of the tickets. "On the count of 3 you guys put your hand in there grab a paper and pull it out!"
"One...." Steve said, all of us looking at each other nervously.
"Two...." We all licked our lips and stared.
"THREE!!!"
