Superstitions; it's not just footballers who have them! Us fans get pretty worked up about what brings us luck and what doesn't too!
Some football players may eat a special meal and then go to bed at the same time every night before a match. Then, on the day of the game, they may slip on their left boot first before their right and when they step out onto the pitch, they may touch the pitch with their left hand or step on with their right foot first. Those are the kind of superstitions players have.
So when I woke up on the day of Liverpool's home game against Aston Villa, of course I had to carry out my routine which ensured that the Reds would win that day!
To be fair, I hadn't been doing it for long but on every match day I had found myself subconciously doing things before a game that I had never done before and then repeating them every time Liverpool played a game..
First, I'd wake up at exactly 9am and whilst pulling on my dressing gown, I'd put my right arm in first before my left; I'd then go to the kitchen and eat toast with marmalade and then I'd have a cup of tea and NOTHING ELSE! The meal should take approximately 15 minutes to eat; I'd then go back into my room and change into jeans and my Liverpool jersey.
I never change it even if the team lose because I've just become accustomed to it now. It sounds like I have terrible OCD but I swear, it works!
As I was boiling the kettle for my routine cup of tea, Jay entered the room, yawning as he did so.
"Will you pour me one too?" he heaved himself up onto the kitchen counter and I sighed. He was gonna mess up my schedule, I just knew it!
"How is the rib this morning?" Jay asked whilst I grabbed another mug out of the cupboard.
"Well, it still hurts like a little bitch but there's nothing I can do about that.," I placed a tea bag in each mug.
"Mmm..." he yawned again.
I poured boiling hot water into both mugs and turned around to face Jay. He was wearing his usual stewards uniform: plain black trousers and a fluorescent orange jacket. He hated having to wear it but I thought it made him look professional, even if he was just a football steward.
"Looking forward to today?" I smiled at him and started to eat my toast. He gave a tired sigh and managed out a small smile.
"Yeah...I guess so,"
"You're so lucky. I'd do anything for job like yours," I took a bite of my toast and Jay laughed.
"Haha, I can't imagine you throwing out a rowdy fan for saying something offensive. Bitch, you can hardly kill someone on Call of Duty!" Jay said and I had to laugh; it was true!
I continued to make our mugs of tea whilst Jay chatted about work. The more and more he babbled on about working at matches and how travelling to the mighty Anfield every other weekend made work much more exciting, the more I felt jealous. I know it was part of Jay's job in which he got to work at the Reds' home ground but I wanted to visit the place so badly, I couldn't help but feel small pangs of envy every time he talked about it.
I've never been to Anfield before, so I just had to settle with watching games on the TV and listening to them on the radio.
Dylan and Aaron then entered the room which interrupted my train of thought.
"Yo, sis! Make us some too," Dylan bounded over to the kitchen table and sat down. I rolled my eyes.
"You guys are messing up my schedule!" I huffed.
"Screw the schedule, Bea! Me and Aaron are off to the game today; who needs luck when we'll be there?" Dylan beamed and I nearly dropped the two mugs I'd been taking out of the cupboard.
"You're both going to the game? Since when?!"
"Coach got us tickets yesterday and we only just found out this morning," Aaron said as he joined his best friend at the kitchen table.
I gasped and frowned. That was so unfair! I wanted to go!
"Now I have no one to watch it on TV with! I'm so jealous..." I sighed and sipped my tea.
"We're sorry, Bea. We'll get you a scarf!" Dylan said, reassuringly.
After I had made Dylan and Aaron's tea, I sighed and walked into the living room with my own mug and toast and left the boys to talk about today's game.
I felt just a little disappointed that I had to stay and watch the match on TV by myself whilst the boys got to go and experience the magic of Anfield. I'd been longing to go ever since I was little and if I recieved the opportunity to go with my best friends then I definitely wouldn't turn down the chance.
Ah well...watching it on the TV would be just as good, right?
