A young pup opened her eyes for the first time, taking in the bright and fading light of the day. She looked around dazed and surprised that there was so many new colors around her. The pup sat up on shaky legs and flicked an ear she jumped as a new face entered her vision, it was a large creature black as night with blue fur and blue eyes. The pup did not know what to do the creature turned and called something she did not understand and suddenly there was more faces with the first each calling out "hello!" or "Shes awake!" Suddenly a large form stepped over her and barked out an order then left returning a few minutes later with someone trailing behind. The newcomer shoved through the crowd some of them moved others bowed and backed away, it came in and lay in front of the pup gazing at her with kind eyes. She yawned and the newcomer laughed.
"She is doing well?" He asked standing and looking at another creature who nodded in reply.
"Talk to her she may be confused." said one, they all looked at the pup, who was confused about all that was happening the newcomer chuckled.
"you have your mothers eyes." he said then laughed when the pup sneezed. He smiled and sat up saying "Welcome to the tribe, Riola." Riola the name pleased the pup and she suddenly had a deep understanding of who the creature was.
"Dada!" she squeaked running forward and jumping up onto his nose balancing herself on shaky paws.
"please little one, call me Chief" he smiled knocking Riola over gently. Chief stood and laughed "Arua-Strenoua, gift from the stars" he smiled "come, follow me you have a lot to learn." He turned and walked from the nursery. Riola waddled after him gazing at the awed looks from her tribemates she heard murmurs and caught someone saying.
"She looks exactly like her father." She gazed at the friendly face that said it and trotted on, squeaking happily she caught up to Chief who had sat by a gnarled tree root his ears perked.
"Riola," he smiled pulling the pup close and gazed up the trunk of the tree. "This will one day be your home once you can run and climb," he glanced down at the pup smiling. "you will do great things one day." he smiled licking the top of Riola's head she squealed with displeasure and rolled over. Chief laughed "you do have so much to learn."
"Dada!" came the reply from the pup who smiled a toothless grin. Chief stood and grabbed the pup in his teeth gently and carefully padding to the center of camp where he set her down.
"Everyone gather 'round!" he called. Tribemates of all sizes peeked out from dens, trees, and stopped all work they all came closer. Chief sat bursting with pride as he gazed down at his new pup he looked up "Though we have had a rough few days the spirits have blessed us with the arrival of my pup, Riola!" Happy smiles broke out among the tribe.
"Sir, isn't the name Riola a sacred name to our people?" someone called out. Chief perked his ears.
"Yes it is, but Riola is special she will lead our tribe to greatness!" Chief replied with a smile. Merik padded to the front of the crowd.
"Chief it is time for her to rest." He said approaching the pup. Chief nodded.
"Very well." he leaned down and licked Riola's head he led her back to the nursery and curled up in a nest.
"Sir, I can watch her if you want to go rest in your den." Merik offered. But Chief did not hear he was already asleep.
