Riola reached out blindly, hoping to grab some sort of surface in her claws. At first there was nothing, except for the feeling of hanging in the air for what felt like an eternity.
Suddenly there was rock, Riola's eyes flew open as she slammed into the rocks on the other side of the gorge and scrambled for a grip on the crumbly surface. Riola groaned with exhaustion but kept holding on. She finally found her grip on the Rock and lunged upward finally managing to get a paw on the top of the gorge. There was faint sounds from somewhere nearby, screaming? Riola couldn't tell, she heaved upward a final time before collapsing on the edge of the gorge. Riola heard Veral shout something and saw him run for her but slid to a stop as if, afraid, before falling into unconsciousness.C'mon Riola, get up. Riola stirred slightly.
who's there? Riola thought not opening her eyes she shifted slightly and listened to the voices again.
Wait Riola? Was that you? The voice came again. Riola hissed slightly this time.
Wait, Veral? Riola thought the voice gasped.
Get up! please I can explain what's happening! Veral sounded fearful yet mesmerized by something.
Riola shifted again and opened her eyes Veral stood in front of her, his eyes were filled with worry. She moved her head across the ground and saw Morra who backed away, Riola whined quietly and tried to say something but nothing came out. Riola looked around again and saw Zeyla, she had gotten away but was badly injured.
Zeyla! Riola thought lifting her head quickly,
"Woah Riola calm down!" Zeyla called approaching the chieftans-daughter.
Riola whined again, what's wrong with me? She thought desperately moving her paws so she could stand up.
"Stay there." Zeyla said calmly she was the only one who wasn't afraid of something. Riola gasped seeing a bloody wound had been gouged in her friends neck.
Riola tried to say something again but couldn't, Zeyla smiled patiently.
"I know, I'm hurt. I'll be fine." She promised.
"What happened to me?" Riola asked finally finding her voice, Zeyla smiled and got closer.
"It would seem you have discovered one of your powers." Zeyla said with a proud smile,
"Wha?" Came Riola's reply. She shoved herself to her feet and steadied herself. MRiola shook her head and opened her eyes, then looked at her friends. Who looked back up at her.
Riola padded in a circle carefully then paused back in front of her friends, Zeyla smiled, "here this might help." She said and a puddle of water appeared on the ground. Riola leaned down and glanced into the puddle, reeling back in shock at what she saw.
The creature in the puddle wasn't her yet, it was. Riola gazed in wonder at her new features, she took in the orange swirl that came down from her eyes and the blue, orange, and red dots that lined the top of her eyes.
"Is this?" Riola breathed, Zeyla nodded.
"Yes you finally have changed to a beast." Zeyla smiled with what seemed like pride. Riola laughed happily and spun in a tight circle to glance at her other features. She flicked her new long dragon-like tail then looked back at her friends realizing how tall she was compared to them now.
"Riola, this is amazing! You can help father now!" Veral exclaimed launching into the air and hovering at eye level with his large cousin.
"Oh gods! Father! We have to show him!" Riola exclaimed in reply almost knocking Veral out of the air.
"Wait Riola, Zeyla's hurt and Sharptooth is still over there. They tried to get across but fled when they saw you." Veral said worry filling his voice.
"We can get past them." Riola replied determined, she turned toward the gorge and glanced down at the now small drop. "Come on, lets go back." She said narrowing her eyes and smiling. Zeyla smiled then groaned, her adrenaline was wearing off and the real pain of the wound was now seeping in.
"Zeyla stay still!" Morra said panicked. Before Morea could do anything Riola leaned down and carefully grabbed her injured tribemate in her teeth. Riola turned to the gorge and backed away from it. She crouched down bunching her muscles then launched forward and flying over the gorge with ease. Riola tumbled to the ground careful to keep Zeyla safe.
Morra laughed happily "that was amazing!" She called then ran for the gorge and leapt over. Morra struggled to get across again but used vines to get up.
"Veral, scout ahead and make sure Sharptooth is not nearby." Riola told her cousin as he flew across the gorge. Veral nodded and flew ahead.
"Morra keep watch on the ground." Riola commanded her friend who nodded and padded ahead waiting to lead the large tribemate through the trees.
"Hold on Zeyla, we'll get you home." Riola muttered to the limp bundle that hung from her teeth. Zeyla grunted in response. "Tell me about my fathers beast form, you were there when he first transformed right?" She asked hoping to keep Zeyla busy and distracted from the pain. Zeyla laughed in reply.
"Yes I was there, when he first transformed, he destroyed his den because he was having a nightmare." Zeyla laughed, Riola stifled a laugh as well. Then followed Morra at a slow pace. Morra glanced back at the towering tribemate every once in awhile hoping her mother was still awake.
Riola's head snapped to the sky as Veral dove from the clouds. "Riola we got company! It's something big!" He called once he was within earshot of his cousin. Riola nodded and set Zeyla down, "Morra take Zeyla, I'll handle this." She growled. Morra smiled nervously and helped her mother away from the large beast.
Riola stood her ground then launched forward with a roar. She lengthened her stride and was soon flying across the ground, Riola kept her gaze focused ahead and slowed when something neared. She roared again and leapt forward barreling into the enemy. Riola opened her mouth in a roar and bared her fangs, she gasped for breath as the attacker suddenly kicked her underbelly sending the large beast rolling to the ground.
Riola leapt back to her feet and snarled, she looked into the fuzzy face of her attacker who smiled back with pride.
"Riola," Came the attackers soft voice.
"Dad!" Riola barked happily and barreled toward her father, who did the same. She met her father happily nuzzling the other massive beast. Chief pulled away,
"Tell me everything!" Chief laughed happily, he looked back as Towler emerged from the bushes.
"Riola?" He asked looking in her direction then bowed.
"No time for formalities Towler, Zeyla's hurt." Riola replied grimly. Towler gasped and Riola nodded in the direction of the hurt tribemate. Towler raced away.
Riola turned back to her father and smiled then told him everything that had happened. Chief hissed unhappily at the mention of Sharptooth.
"At least you're safe, and now great beast, you have gotten your power." Chief smiled happily his chest puffed up with pride.
"I'm glad it's finally happened, but there's one problem," Riola said.
"What is it?" Chief asked tilting his head.
Riola laughed, "I have no idea how to change back."
