There comes a point

Where it all becomes too much.

When we get too tired to fight anymore.

So we give up.

Chapter 21
"Naming Betrayal"

Saphira's POV:

There are times where I think Nate will come to me at night. Where he'll slide under the covers, hover close to me and fight all of the nightmares away. He doesn't, but that doesn't stop me from wishing he would.

Cause if I thought the things I saw in my dreams before were bad, they're nothing compared to the new ones. The one's I've been living in for the past couple of nights.

Nate doesn't come, though. In fact, he hasn't talked to me for nearly three days. It's not like I haven't tried. But no conversation starter, no eye contact and no close proximity has had any success in him even acknowledging my existence.

The blood stained bandages that wrap around my forearm act as a reminder of why he might just act like he is.

I'm broken.

And he's finally figured out that putting me back together isn't even an option more or less something he'll be able to achieve.

So why does it hurt so much when he pretends I'm invisible?

I was the one pushing him away, I was the one whose reactions were catastrophic, I was the asshole. And when Nate finally gives me a taste of my own medicine, I act like he's poisoned me.

Such a fucking hypocrite.

Besides, it's not as if the almighty Nate Johnson would converse with a 'normal' like me. His reputation doesn't involve being around the likes of me. He's fallen back into it - the whole bad guy thing.

His clothes smell of smoke once more, his eyes are hard all the time, and he skips class more often than not. There are times when he doesn't even come back to his house.

Part of me knows why, but it doesn't want to admit it.

The other part tells me what he's been doing without mercy, as if punishing me.

Or perhaps, who he's been doing.

"You know you won't win that staring contest, right? It's a wall, it doesn't blink."
