I went in the ambulance with Jace, and when we got there I bolted out and the paramedics pointed the way to the waiting room. I paced back and for who knows how long. I looked at the few people who were already waiting. A little girl and a mother sat together, the mother crying but the girl just sat confused holding on to her mother’s hand. A woman no older than 25 was staring blankly at the ceiling. But in the corner sat an old woman, all alone. Her eyes were glassy and I smiled sadly walking over to her.
I sat in the chair next to her and she looked at me. Her face could have made even the coldest of hearts melt, the sorrow in them so great, “They say they don’t know how much longer he has,” The old woman started, “But I love him more than anything, and I told him to fight.” I nodded.
“I love someone, too.” I said staring ahead. My eyes began to droop, until my body relaxed and I lay my head on the uncomfortable seat until I fell into a peaceful sleep.
I woke up what felt like only 20 minutes later. I had a small fleece blanket on top of me and something was keeping my head warm. I smiled snuggling closer. With my conscious still not completely aware of my surroundings I opened my eyes just a crack and saw a speck of blond hair. I closed my eyes again but they shot open and I looked up to see Zach’s features.
He had an noticeable high cheek bones, and his eyes were a stunning blue. His hair was blond and gave a shaggy look. He was hot. Wait. Did I just think that? Oh my god I’m crazy. He was sleeping, his head still on mine. I quickly shot up and his eyes went wide open full of alert.
When he noticed me, he calmed down. “What are you doing here?” I hissed at him.
“I came to check on you to see if you were ok, I saw you looked cold sleeping then went back and got a blanket for you. Then I fell asleep. It’s only been an hour and a half….Um 10:00pm.” As soon as he said the time a doctor came out and pulled me aside.
“Sorry it took so long to get to you, miss. Jace Evan’s condition was very bad. Whatever happened, the gash in his stomach was very concerning, because the bleeding would not stop, and with that it is implied he has lost a lot of blood. We’re still trying to get him into a stable condition…but for right now we can just keep working. He won’t be seeing anyone for a while so go home and rest. I’m sure you’ve had quite a night, miss.” He walked away and I slowly turned around walking back towards Zach. He stood up and came to me wrapping his arms along with the blanket around me.
Just then the old lady came out and smiled. Her mood was much better so I could only assume that her husband was ok. “This is him, I presume.” I nodded not thinking about what she was referring to and she smiled brighter. As we turned around my eyes widened remembering our conversation.
I don’t think I could ever love him.
We got in the car, and he looked at me, “What was that all about?” Zach asked.
“Uh-um-Well it’s-“ I stuttered ungracefully.
“You don’t have to tell.” He sighed.
“Stop it.” I said suddenly. He looked at me confused, starting the car.
“What did I-“
“Zach,” I said tears beginning to brim my eyes, “It’s your fault that Jace is in there. So don’t go off almost possibly killing someone then expect me to act like it never happened. What did he do that could make you do something to put him in this condition?”
“Raven…”
Zach’s POV
Even if I tried to tell her, she would just end up pushing me even further away. I thought about earlier when I became so obsessive. I had never done that to anyone before. I didn’t know what I was going to tell Raven when we got home, which wouldn’t be long.
Could I really tell her how I felt? I was sounding like a girl now. This mate stuff was seriously messing with my brain.
We pulled into the drive way of my house, and I parked the car in the garage. She got out and then I followed, and we walked to the front door. Before we both walked in I stopped her, “Raven wait.” She stopped and looked right into my eyes.
“What.” Her beautiful voice echoed through my mind.
“I’m sorry for what I did…I know, I don’t deserve an apology and I’m going to have to try a lot harder than this. But it wasn’t fair. He had-well has you. I was and still am jealous. When he came in I went all out on him. But I couldn’t stop it Raven.” Her eyes were dazed and I finished what I was going to say, “Raven, I love you.”
Then I kissed her.
