Chapter 5

The day after the vigil Bramblekit woke up and saw her mother and sisters still sleeping. She heard a growl and at first she was startled but then realized it was her stomach. She padded to the fresh-kill pile to see if there was anything good left from last night. All she saw was two sodden mice. She looked around confused because she smelled fresh prey. Then she turned at a rustle at the entrance of the camp and the dawn patrol came in, every member carrying fresh prey. She waited for them to approach the pile and set down the prey. When they were finished she grabbed a sparrow and sat down under her favorite tree to eat. By then cats around the camp were beginning to stir. Bramblekit's best friend,Turtlekit, came and sat next to her with a mouse."i'm sorry about Stormcloud " Turtlekit said. Bramblekit looked at the ground sadly and said "its OK.". She took a bite of her sparrow and chewed slowly. Turtlekit leaned over and nuzzled her shoulder. Her siblings came up to them with blank expressions on their faces. Everyone sat around the tree in complete silence, thinking about Stormcloud. Bramblekit let her eyes wander and saw Cherrywhisker still sleeping.  When she was done eating she went to the nursery and went back to sleep. She woke up to a loud shriek and gasped"Cherrywhisker!" she ran out of the nursery to find Cherrywhisker clinging to Stormcloud's body" please,don't bury him!" she shrieked. "Cherrywhisker we have to.""NO!!!!" she screamed. Amberstar came up and pried her off of his body."i'm sorry about this Cherrywhisker. "no, don't bury him" Cherrywhisker cried. Four warriors took his body out and buried him, while Bramblekit and her siblings went to watch. While they were lowering him into the hole Bramblekit whispered under her breath"goodbye Stormcloud."They all went back to camp and Bramblekit went to comfort Cherrywhisker."Cherrywhisker. You OK" Bramblekit said hesitantly. "GO AWAY. IF YOU HAD LISTENED AND STAYED IN THE NURSERY I WOULD HAVE BEEN HELPING STORMCLOUD AND HE WOULD'NT HAVE DIED. THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT" Cherrywhisker screamed and turned her back on her. Kinkfur came over and coaxed her to her den. Bramblekit looked around, scared. Amberstar came over and said "i'm sorry Bramblekit, i'm sure she didn't mean it."" doesn't matter if she meant it" said Bramblekit,choking up "she was right." then she ran off to the nursery and cried herself to sleep.
