(Y/N) P.O.V.
"Carl, come on!" you yelled to your boyfriend as you sprinted through the woods. You two had jumped the wall to return to your fallen tree where you would sit and read comics together. A herd had come up behind you two and you had been spotted.
"I'm going as fast as I can. Just keep running!" He panted, pushing his legs to go faster. After what felt like an eternity of running, a storage facility came into view. Rows of locked storage units sat in the large clearing.
"Carl, there!" you pointed. You two both ran towards the units, attempting to find an unlocked unit. Every single one was locked, of course with your stupid luck.
"(Y/N), do you still have those bolt cutters?" Carl asked, referring to your large backpack. Carl began shooting at the many walkers as you rummaged through your bag for the bolt cutters. You found them and Carl and you switched places. You shot at the walkers as Carl fought to cut the chain and padlock. Chains clattered on the ground as he managed to cut through them. He lifted the metal door. "Get in there!" he yelled. You slid under the door as the herd pressed closer to you. As you stood up to grab the door, it slammed shut.
"Carl!" you screamed, banging on the door. You reached for the door and tried to lift it up.
Once it was an inch off the ground, Carl grunted, "Don't open that, I'll be there in a sec." You didn't listen and lifted the door open, pulling your boyfriend inside. As the door came rattling down, a walker was in the middle of trying to crawl inside. Its skull was demolished under the door's weight, spewing the dark blood and guts across the floor.
"Don't you dare do that again," you mumbled as you brought him into your arms, holding so tight. He grunted in pain as your grip tightened around his shoulders. You pulled back and looked at him with a questioning look.
He saw the look on your face and tried to ease your curiosity with an, "I'm fine." The blood stain on his right shoulder said differently. You pulled his collar aside, revealing the broken skin. Teeth marks were embedded into his shoulder as blood leaked out of the wound. You backed up into the nearest wall and slid down it, beginning to sob. The only thing that you never wanted to happen happened. "I'm sorry. I had to get you to safety," he whispered.
"Can't we amputate it or something?" you asked through sobs, trying to find another solution.
"No, it's too high up. If we tried, we'd have to take off my neck too," he sighed as he joined you on the floor, grunting the whole way down. He sighed in relief as he was finally off of his feet. You looked next to you to see the troubled boy, clearly in a lot of pain. More tears leaked from your eyes as you realized there was no getting out of this, your love was going to die. The worst part of it all, there was nothing you could do about it. You and Carl sat on the floor holding each other until it was too physically demanding for him to hold you any longer.
His arms fell to his sides and his breathing got heavier. "I don't know how much longer I have, baby," he sighed. Your lip quivered as you shook your head, still denying that he was going to die.
"You can't go, Carl," you cried, shoving your face into his chest. He groaned and you loosened your grip.
"I'm sorry, but there's nothing we can do. You were my first priority, I had to get you safe first," he mumbled as he leaned his head on your shoulder. He was too weak to hold himself up. You cried harder as the guilt washed over you. He was going to die because he couldn't let it happen to you. "It may seem so heroic, but it's actually... really selfish... I couldn't let... you die... I had to be the one... because if you... died I would... not be able... to live," he tried to speak but he was losing his strength, and fast.
"You... have to... put me down," he pleaded. You shook your head vigorously as the tears continued to flood your eyes.
"I can't," you choked through your tears.
"(Y/N), please... I can't even... hold my head up... let alone a gun," he once again pleaded into your shoulder. You cried as you sat up from your spot, laying him on the ground gently. You pulled out your pistol and doubled over, crying harder than you ever had. You eventually kneeled down over him and pressed the barrel to his temple.
"I love you, (Y/N)" he breathed out, ready to face his demise.
"I love you too, Carl," you sobbed. Your finger slowly tightened over the trigger and you looked away. You cringed when the loud bang filled the room, your ears starting to ring. As you regained your sense of hearing, you looked at your deceased boyfriend. He laid pale and lifeless on the ground as blood oozed from his temple. He was gone. And there was nothing you could do but sob.
